Running Rogue Chapter 9

Elle POV

"I don't understand."

"There's nothing to understand, I know you're bad at math but this is simple. You need to stop."

"Stop, what I really don't understand, please help me out, I'm not trying to be funny. I am honestly lost." I said baffled at what she was talking about.

"You need to stop. I saw you. If I saw you then anyone could have seen you. This isn't just your social life you're risking it's your life and your family's life. Wolves can be vicious when it comes to revenge and betrayal, they won't stop."

I understood now but I needed to know how.

"How? How did you know? We were so careful."

"I volunteer at the aquarium sometimes, even though the drive is long. Listen we're friends but if you ruin these ties you will bring disgrace to my family and death to yours. Don't let what they say be true. YOU Elle, are worth it but sneaking around isn't. I understand the pull, but if anything just take the  pills please. I'm begging you because secrets are hard to keep in a pack of wolves."

"You don't understand. You can't understand, you've never felt it." I insisted

"Listen Elle, we're friends and I didn't want to have to put it like this but if you don't stop you're going to die. If you're seen as a threat to the pack you'll die to draw him in. Don't let him bring you down. He's already dead to the pack. Don't be next. This ends now, you are already under probation so just follow the rules, it's not that bad. It's really not."

I guess this was another moment of clarity. I wasn't ready to die. I was sixteen, this was ridiculous. My mother was right my grades were slipping and I was stepping out of line. Love wasn't worth this, we didn't even have love. I needed to get my act together. I still didn't even know Jason well. What was his last name? Not only was he not forthcoming with information but I don't think I actually meant anything to him. Maybe the idea of a mate piqued his interest but Elle the human did not.

"Okay, how do I make him stop."

"Tell the pack where he lives so the pack can take care of it."

"No, Jason walks out alive no matter what. Besides I don't even know where he lives anyway."

"That's a lie. He must have taken you there before. Your mark."

"What about it?" I reached up to touch the raw bite mark.

"He must have taken you somewhere to recover and sleep. Where did he take you Elle?"

"I-I don't remember I wasn't paying attention on the ride and it was dark. I'm sorry but I just can't"

She sighed and looked at the ground. She pondered her options for a moment and I think she picked the one on being a good friend and not trying to squeeze information out of me.

She pushed a piece of gold hair out of her face and pursed her lips and glanced at me. I thought she was going to say sorry for a moment but she didn't. Instead she smoothed out her sweater dress and pulled up her boots.
