Colby is bouncing in the backseat. We are excitedly talking about dogs.

"Are you thinking like a puggle, or? Because puggles are awesome. But so are other dogs. Geez, I'm just so excited. Doggies!" He babbles.

I laugh from the passenger seat as Sam drives.

"I want a mutt. I have always just wanted a mutt. This is going to be my first dog, my brother is allergic."

Colby gasps. "How could you grow up without a dog?!"

"We always had cats. Most recently, my sister has a cat, the family has a cat, and I left my 11 year old cat with them. I miss my cats, and I will get my own one day, but I've always wanted a dog."

"Cats are cool. But yeah, you will love having a dog." Sam says.

We pull up at the animal shelter, and Colby explodes out of the back seat. I am a second behind him, while Sam calmly gets out of the car like a loser.

"Come on!" I call behind me, bouncing on my toes with Colby as we wait, so we can walk in together.

He rolls his eyes and smiles, and we go in.

We walk up to the desk. There is a lady sitting behind it. She smiles at us as we approach.

"Hi, how can I help you?" She asks.

I smile back. "Hello. I filled out an adoption application last week, and I got a call this morning that I was approved. I'm here to pick out a dog." I say.

She beams. "Oh, yay! What's your name?" She asks, looking it up on the computer.

"Fable McCune."

"Oh! I rememeber the application. You have an unusual name, but it's pretty." She says, finding it.

"Thank you." I say.

"Through the door at the end of the hall. Have fun." She says.

We go through the door, and there's somebody in there to open cages and help us.

We look at all the dogs, and this is the happiest I have ever been. Colby too, by his smile.

I finally decide on a Husky/ hound mix. He's about the size of a lab or golden, he's a boy, and he is freaking amazing. His name is Elvis, but I'll change it.

I sign the papers, attatch the leash and collar I bought already, and we head to the car.

I let him sniff around outside and pee first, before we get in.

"He's so cute!" I say. The boys smile.

"He is, good choice!" Colby says.

"Yeah. What are you gonna name him?" Sam asks.

I smile at them, and look back at the dog.

"Nugget." I say, and the dog looks up at me.

"Are you a nugget?" I ask him. He smiles a big doggy smile, and comes up to be petted. "Yeah, you're my little Nugget now, aren't you?" I coo at him.

"Nugget!" Colby says excitedly. "I love chicken nuggets and I love dogs, this is the perfect arrangement." He says.

"All right then, come on, let's go home." He says.

I help Nugget into the back seat, and slide in next to him. Colby goes to the passenger seat, and we head to my apartment.

A few months later, and things are better. We don't spend quite as much time together, which is okay, because now I have Nugget, and have enrolled in an online school for a two year dagree in Graphic Design. The classes are very managable, so I still have time to paint, and keep the house up, and get a part time job, and still spend most of my time with Nugget, and other, human friends.
