Gary and I climbed the few steps up to the large white doors which were already open, and upon entering I felt like throwing up – I knew most of these people and some, who had noticed my arrival, had stopped in their chatter to stare as we walked in.
I swallowed hard, about ready to bolt when Gary squeezed my hand tightly, taking the lead into the room and straight to the bar set up to the left side.
The large room was as grand as the outside, with low hanging crystal chandeliers and French windows lining the far wall opposite the door we came in leading outside to a stunning large garden – complete (I realized) with an oversized fountain.
To the right, there were two sets of stairs that curved up and met in the middle, for the second floor that was shut off by doors.
It was perfect – a little too perfect, and that kinda scared me.
“Drink this” I gasped when Gary shoved a glass into my hand filled with God knows what.
“Gary – you know what happens when I drink” I trailed off, looking into the glass and scrunching my nose up at the smell. “Shit happens” I grumbled finally but when I looked up, Gary was throwing back his glass with ease…. He wasn’t listening.
“Well, against this crowd – alcohol will be your new best friend~” He hummed, ordering another drink and darn if the bar wasn’t free – This wasn’t turning out well.
“Tristen!?” I blinked, turning about to look to the women who had called my name… and gulping. Shit.
“Tristen! It is you!! Oh don’t you look a dream!!” The elegantly dressed woman gushed grabbing my hands in hers and pulling me forcefully into a hug before kissing my cheek and pulling back, but not letting go of my arms as she looked me up and down.
Mrs Kelly - Jake's mother.
“Erm Hey Mrs Kelly” I stepped away from her when she released me, swallowing uncomfortably as more women suddenly began to hurry over as well.
“Oh Tristen! You look amazing! Where have you been? Oh! We could have used a man like you when it came to planning out all of this~” Mrs Ward (Anthony’s mother) gushed, clutching her champagne glass in one hand as she reached with the other to pinch my cheek.
“Erm – well, I…” I stuttered, looking down to the ground – heart thudding in my ears but I barely got a word in when another woman I didn’t know stepped up.
“I heard you ran off to another country! Was it really to much for you when you heard Jake and Anthony were getting engaged?” she continued starkly, looking me in the eye for confirmation just as Mrs Ward stepped up and batted her hand softly against the woman’s arm.
“Bless the boy; he was Jake’s boyfriend before Anthony, so you have to understand it must have been a shock for him” Mrs Ward hummed, pouting to the other women before she fake smiled at me.
“Well Tristen shouldn’t have left him if he was going to be this upset! Honestly” Someone tutted, followed by murmurs of agreement.
“I very much agreed – Why did you leave Jake, Tristen?” Mrs Kelly hummed, taking one of the champagne glasses off a passing waiter’s tray and taking a sip causally as she looked to me expectantly – as did all the other women.
I stared at them, jaw dropping in disbelief and at a total loss for words. JEZZZZZ I hate these women! They were always so judging and rude.
“Gary! Tristen!!” I don’t think I’d been so happy – and scared to hear that voice again.
