“If your mum keeps feeding me those macaroons, I’m gunna be fat before we get back to California” Gary huffed as he sat down beside me at the dinning room table – the only place in this house that had chairs to a table (apart from desks).
I’d decided to do some work for college since I had a lot of catching up to do~ Of course it was easier said then done.
“Gary we’ve only been here a day” I replied distantly, continuing to write out my assignment – though I could hardly concentrate with the way mum and Gary were getting on, which wasn’t a bad thing but… still.
“A day is all it takes~” Mum chirped as she leaned between us to put a colourful plate of macaroons in front of Gary.
“Mrs Dodgem, PLEASE! No more!!” Gary begged, leaning away from the yummy looking macaroons. I chuckled, reaching out and taking one to nibble on as I read through my notes.
“I said to call me Hoshi, Gērī~” She hummed; beaming her brightest white teethed smile as she stayed leaned between our chairs, watching Gary with big brown eyes.
I noticed, like my name, she pronounced Gary’s name slightly differently too.
“Okāsan~” I began to whine, not really happy that my mum was bugging Gary again - but she only scoffed, wrapping a hand around my head and covering my mouth as she pushed the plate closer to Gary with the other.
“You eat and gain your strength!” She spoke softly, but I recognized that manipulation under her words – one of the reason I don’t eat much… my mum will feed you till you burst … and then keep feeding you.
Gary looked at me desperately, my mother was staring him down waiting for him to give in, and I?? - I was trying to do my work so I could at least pass this year with ‘decent grades’!!
“Okāsan!!” I finally managed to gasp out; prying her hand from my mouth but when mum turned to me she looked deadly, a lethal glare set in her brown eyes but she waited for me to continue. I gulped – today seemed like a good day to die anyways - “Back off!”
I was so dead.
“Masashi!” Mum exclaimed before leading off into a stream of angry Japanese, pulling away to stare at me in shock before she glanced at Gary and then back at me. She then surprising us both when she reached out and grabbed Gary’s arm – dragging him out of the dinning room and into the kitchen.
“Mrs Dodgem!!” Gary exclaimed as she pulled him away. I rolled my eyes, getting back to my work…. It lasted the whole of five minutes though.
“What she say?” Gary asked, falling back into the seat beside me – looking relieved he’d been able to escape my mother (I had a feeling it wouldn’t be long before she got him back however).
I sighed, slumping in my seat (dropping my pen) and clearing my throat as I turned to face Gary, “Masashi! How dare you talk to me like that! Gary does not need to hear your foul language!” I recited/translated what my mother had said in Japanese to English, making my voice slightly higher to mock my mothers voice – but I should have checked behind me first because as soon as the words left my lips a dish clothe was quick to attack my face.
“Okāsan!!!” I yelped, wrapping my arms around my head to shield me from her attacks.
“Gah -- Hoshi!! Hitori de anata no musuko o nokoshite!” my father suddenly shouted (something along the lines of ‘Leave your son alone’), making my mum quickly back off though she continued to shoot me glares of betrayal.
“Thanks dad” I grumbled, looking over my shoulder to my father who was dressed in his suit ready for work, coffee in hand as he came to join us at the table.
