“Watashi wa kore o shinjite inai! Āron! Āron! Masashi ga kaettekita!” mother wailed into the house, her Japanese never faltering despite all the years she’d spent in England with my dad.
I sighed, following the grumbling women inside and gesturing for Gary to come inside as we were led down the narrow hall way and into the living room which was a mixture of traditional Japanese and modern British style.
Sitting on a pillow on the floor by the small wooden table was a skinny looking man with brownish red hair brushed to the side over his thick framed glasses which were sliding down his nose as he scribbled something furiously down on paper, before his blue eyes looked up to meet mine.
“Masashi?” he asked, his accent not as thick as mums but still held some Asian trait. He stared at me for a moment, getting up slowly to his feet and taking a hesitant step towards me – I was half expected him he to hit me much like mum did but was pleasantly surprised when instead he pulled me into his arms.
He was taller then me – just a bit shorter then Gary… probably Seth’s height… oh darn, Why did I think that when I was hugging my dad - the thought hurt and so I shoved it to the back of my mind, smiling warmly at my dad’s kind yet aging face when he pulled away and cupped my cheeks in his palms.
“Oh god Tristen – You scared us half to death…. Where were you??” I swallowed. He sounded really concerned – I hadn’t meant to frighten them but I just needed to get away at the time.
“Hey Dad…. Erm… California?” I tried, watching something flicker in my father’s blue eyes before he huffed and went for the phone on the wall.
“Your grandfather could have at least called and told us you were with him!” He stated heatedly as he punched in numbers but I quickly stepped forward and took the phone form him – hanging it back onto the wall.
“I wasn’t with granddad… I went by my self… and applied for college…. ErmUniversity” I explained to wish my dad blinked and then crossed his arms over his chest looking irked.
“MASASHI!! How dare you go and not tell us!” My mum suddenly spoke up from beside my dad waving a dish cloth at me angrily.
“Okāsan…” I began but my mother flicked her cloth at me, catching me in the face before my dad caught her and pulled her away, muttering something in Japanese to her which made her huff and head off to the kitchen. Dad watched her go before he turned back to me looking sternly.
“Why did you leave?” He asked, his voice sounding slightly harsh and I stepped back nervously, rubbing at my arm and chewing my lower lip as I tried to think of a valid excuse but nothing was coming up.
“It was Jake wasn’t it?” He asked suddenly and I guess I confirmed his suspicions when I looked up at him in shock. Dad only nodded, removing his glasses and cleaning them with the end of his shirt.
“He came over after you left and asked for you… he said he couldn’t find you and he wanted to apologize for something” my heart thumped sharply in my chest making me wince.
Why would Jake come to my parents? Was he that desperate to hurt me some more… I mean, I know Jake – he didn’t apologize for things.
“Oh…” I looked down at my feet and sighed… I should have known he’d harass my parents for information… but neither Jake nor Anthony knew where I was… no one did – so how did they find me??
“Errr Tristen?” I jumped, snapping my head up to look at Gary who stood awkwardly behind me looking nervous and out of place in my parents narrow hall way.
