Saving us from ourselves

Kaeli's POV

Phil and Maddie walked off to the flannel section, typical Maddie. I went off to look for new blue jeans, leaving Dan and Andrea alone.

While I was walking towards the denim section, I ran into someone. "Oh! Sorry," I say, looking up at who I ran into. To my surprise, when I looked up, I was staring right at Mark, my crush of three years. "Nah, it's ok," Mark said, "it's my fault. I was looking at my phone." "No. Really," I start, "I wasn't looking where I was going. I'm sorry."

Mark looked at me and smiled, "Is there something you're looking for, Kaeli?" I looked at him and said, " I was going to look for a pair of jeans but-" "I'll buy you something," Mark cut me off. "No," I say, "you won't buy me anything." Mark looked me in the eyes, "It's the least I can do. I ran into you, and..." He stopped mid-sentence. I looked at him quizzically, "And?"

Mark's cheeks started to turn red. "And," he started, "I've liked you fo rthree years. D-do you m-maybe want to g-go out?" I stopped walking, "Y-yes," I manage to say.

Oh. My. Gosh. I think, Mark just asked me out. No way!!  He's liked me as long as I've liked him!!

I continued walking to the denim section, Mark right behind me. He caught up to me and slipped his hand into mine. I think my heart skipped a beat, but I'm pretty sure Mark didn't notice my reaction.

As he took my hand, I think I jumped back a little. Mark took me by surprise. I've known him since elementary school, and we had already graduated high school and began college. We go to the same college across town.

I picked a pair of dark, ripped jeans. Once I found the right air, Mark and I went to find either Phil and Maddie or Dan and Andi.
