Saving us from ourselves

Phil's POV

Maddie walks up to Andrea, hands me her bags, states she has to pee, and runs off. She's so unpredictable. I like that about her.

I sit down by Dan on the bench. "Dan," I say, "you really like Andrea, don't you?"

Dan looks down and I can see his cheeks are turning red. "Yeah," Dan answers, "who wouldn't? She's smart, funny, outgoing. To add to it all, she's also very beautiful. What do you think of Maddie?"

As soon as Dan asked this, I blushed. "Well, she's smart, shy, funny, she loves books, she likes anime, she's adorable, caring, loving, has a good sense of humor, and-" "Who are you describing, Phil?" Maddie cuts me off.

When Maddie stopped me, I jumped, unaware she was behind me. I was nervous now as I answered, "I w-was describing y-you, Maddie." She looked shocked. "You think of me like that?" she asked.

"Yeah, Maddie. I do think of you like that."

"Phil, you said 'and' before I cut you off. What were you going to say?"

Oh no, I thought, I was hoping she wouldn't ask. I was going to tell Dan that I think I...

"Phil?" Maddie asked, interrupting my thoughts.

"Oh," I say, "umm...I was going to tell that that I- uhh- well you see, I think I umm..." I shoot Dan a desperate look for help. He knows what I'm trying to say.

I think I love her, I think to myself.

Dan looks at me. "Say it," he mouths the words to me, "I will tell Andi what you're going to say. I will tell her and Kaeli." "ok," I mouth back.

"Andi. Kaeli," Dan says, "come here. I need to talk to you both." Dan walks away with them and Maddie sits next to me on the bench. She took my hand in hers.

"Phil," Maddie starts, "what were you going to tell Dan? Am I not supposed to know what you think of me?"

I glance over towards Dan and see Andrea and Kaeli start to freak out. He must have told them, I thought.

I'm nervous and I squeeze Maddie's hand. "Maddie," I say, "I think I..."

I stopped and looked towards Dan. "Say it," he mouthed.

I turn to look Maddie in the eye. "Maddie," I start again, "I was going to tell Dan that I think I love you." Maddie looks right at me. "I love you, Maddie."

Maddie covered her mouth in shock. "I-I love you t-too, Phil."

I wasn't sure what to do next, so I pulled Maddie in for a kiss.
