Saving us from ourselves

Andi's POV

Dan and I are sitting on a bench drinking our shakes. Suddenly, Dan cries out in pain and falls on the floor. I don't know what's happening. I'm scared. I decide to call Maddie.
"Hello?" Maddie answers.
"Maddie," I say very shocked.
"Andi? Did something happen?"
The call went on until I cried and told her that Dan was laying on the floor in pain. Maddie told me that she and Phil would be on their way. I hung up and tried to help Dan, crying.
I didn't know what to do. I had just met Dan today, and now this was happening. Maybe it's happened before. Maybe Phil knows what's happening. I hope Dan's ok. I'm very worried.
A few minutes later Maddie and Phil come up to me. "Andi," Maddie says to me, "are you ok? What happened?" Phil walks up to Dan while Maddie walks up to me and gives me a comforting hug.
I needed Maddie and her support right now. I couldn't handle this. If I lost Dan...let's not even go there. It hurts to much.
I look at Maddie desperately. She knows why this is so bad for me. Two years ago, I lost my favorite uncle this way. I didn't want to lose Dan like this. It hurt too much the last time.
Phil is on the ground near Dan checking for a pulse. There is a crowd of people around us by now, each and every face either worried or tear-streaked. I felt bad for everyone having to witness this. I had a feeling paramedics would be here soon.
Just as I thought, five minutes later, there were paramedics surrounding Dan. Phil, Maddie, and I were pushed back into the crowd. I cried and Maddie held me, assuring me that Dan would be fine. I wanted so much to believe her, but after what happened last time...
"We will need to take this man to the hospital," one of the paramedics says to us. "We're coming with," Phil says. He takes Maddie's hand and she takes mine as we walk towards the ambulance waiting outside the mall doors.
Maddie quick takes out her phone and texts Kaeli telling her that we were on our way to the hospital with Dan and that she and Mark should meet us there.

All around us, I hear the beeping of machines. This noise has made me paranoid over the past few years. The last time I heard a beep, it was a long one that wouldn't stop.
Sitting in the waiting room next to Maddie, I began to cry softly. Maddie easily sensed this and wrapped her arms around me. She started crying too. Phil put his hand on her back to calm her.
Phil tried to stay strong for Maddie and I. I know what he was doing. I had to do the same. Stay strong for them, even if it means you look like you don't care.
I know how hard it is. Phil must be broken inside. He's known Dan for so long. I felt just horrible.
Minutes later, a doctor walks out. "Mr. Lester and company..."
