It was now friday, the day after the dance and the day after I first saw that girl. I was at a cheerleading meet and we were all seated on the bleachers in the gym. We were all chatting and waiting for the meet to start when all of a sudden, that girl came in. She was wearing a cheerleading uniform and my first reaction was thinking, "What is she doing at our meet? Hasn't she already done enough the night before?" I turned to the girl sitting next to me and asked,"Do you know her? That girl over there?". She looked down at the girl and replied, "That's Tabitha, she's the new student at our school". "Is she on the squad or something?",I asked. "I guess so. Look, there she comes", she said pointing to the girl who's name was apparently 'Tabitha'. Hey, I found out her name. She was coming to sit with us on the bleachers and sat down right next to me. Great.
"You must be Zoe", she said. "Yeah, how do you know my name?", I asked, confused. "I have been talking to the principal, she told me that you're a great cheerleader and that you could help me if you didn't mind" she explained. "Oh, sure I guess" I said. She smiled and replied,"Thanks". I tried to smile back, but I just couldn't. I had to figure out why she was talking to Dustin, but I couldn't ask at the time.
"Im Tabitha, by the way" she said. Now I was smiling, but it wasn't out of happiness, it was out of suspicion. "Oh yeah, I've heard about you too" I said. We just sat there, sharing different kinds of smiles when the cheer meet finally started. I knew that there was something about this girl that I didn't trust and it was written all over her face. From then on, I would kind of just see the things she did and spy on her a little bit. Well I don't like to say "spy", but I can't really put it in other words, can I?
At one point in our meet, she had to stand up, introduce herself, and tell everyone a bit about herself. Everyone seemed to see her as this nice, sweet, good girl, but I saw her much differently. Like, you know that feeling where you know someone is up to something? Well, that's how I saw her.
In the meet, we also talked about the basketball game, coming up next week and how us cheerleaders needed to be there. After the meet, I went on with the rest of my day and when the bell rang for school to be over for the weekend, Tabitha came up to me while I was at my locker, and said "Hi, Zoe". "Um, hey" was all I said back. "Since we're both on the cheer squad and all, I was wondering if you wanted to hang out a little bit to get to know each other, just you and me" she suggested. At first I didn't really want to, but then I thought maybe I could get the chance to ask her why she was talking to Dustin.
"Sure, that would be great" I said, smiling. "Perfect! So you'll meet me at the park?" she asked. "Sounds great" I said, still fake smiling. "Awesome! See you there" she said, while walking away. I watched her walk out the door.
She must have thought she was so classy, with her silver hoop earrings and pearl necklace. She must have thought that Dustin was all hers. She must have thought that I was falling for her little tricks. Oh, I'll show her, I thought. I just didn't quite know how yet.
