Tabitha showed up about ten minutes later and I apologized for my outburst earlier that day. She told me it was okay and that she was sorry for whatever she had done and we left it at that. I wasn't going to tell her why.
Anyways, we hung out at the mall for a while and by "we" I mean mostly them, it seemed like Tabitha was now trying to steal my best friend. She was talking and having fun with Cleo non-stop. It got pretty annoying, but I kept in control and tried not to let it get to me. Although I did feel left out, I didn't tell them that.
After about an hour or so, we walked to Cleos house and Tabitha showed us a shortcut to get there. I have to admit, that girl sure knew her way around the neighborhood, but I still envied her.
Cleo lives with her mom, dad and her younger sister, Vicky, who was about seven or eight years old and who I had always thought looked a lot like Cleo with her blonde hair and dark blue eyes. Cleo often liked to boss around her sister, but I guess that's a sibling thing. I wouldn't know though because I'm an only child and my parents split up when I was maybe one or two, so I only live with my dad. I visited my mom every now and then, so that worked out too.
Anyways, me and Tabitha stayed for dinner and Cleos parents seemed to like Tabithas manners and kindness. I felt jealous. Why was she getting all the attention? I kept all of my anger thoughts to myself. I remembered how I told Cleo that I would give her a chance. I just kept remembering that.At about 9:30pm, Tabitha and I said our goodbyes to Cleo and started our way down the street. She was walking by my side and at first I didn't know why, until she said "Wanna do something fun?" I didn't look at her, I just faced straight ahead where I was walking. "I should really be going home" I said, firmly. "Oh come on, Zoe, you're a cheerleader" she pleaded. I stopped and faced her. "So?" I wasn't sure what that had to do with it. "So, cheerleaders are supposed to have fun, right?" she said. I was getting frustrated once again with her, I thought she was acting like such a damn child. "Look, I have homework and it's a school night, so I have to go" I started walking again. She didn't follow, which I thought was good, until she said "I can sense things, Zoe". I stopped again and turned around, "What do you mean?"
"I know that you don't like me" she said, "because you're jealous of me".
I knew she was right, but I said nothing. She waited for a response.
"Okay fine, maybe I'm a little jealous" I confessed, "So what?"
"You've got no reason to be jealous of me" she said. "Of course I do, everybody loves you" I turned and started walking again. She caught up to me and we were once again walking side by side. "They do"she smiled. I nodded. "Everybody?" she asked. I looked at her, "What do you mean by that?" Her eyes went all fluttery and she started blushing. "Do you think anyone 'like' likes me?" I knew right away that she was talking about Dustin. "I gotta go, Tabitha" I said, ignoring her question. I walked ahead of her and didn't look back. Things were getting to be too much for me.
