For at least a minute, I stared at the principals office door. I knew that I had to go in there, I just didn't want to. Just get it over with, I thought to myself. I gulped and opened the door slowly. There she was, sitting at her desk with a strict look on her face. The look that you want to avoid from adults. "Take a seat" she said, calmly. Maybe I looked as nervous as I felt. I did as she told me and sat in one of the chairs at the other side of her desk. As I waited awkwardly for her to talk, I studied the surroundings. The wooden desk, the awards on the wall with her name on it, "Sherry Tate", or Mrs. Tate, as of course the students called her. She was also old, well not "old", but older, like in her late forties or early fifties. Older people could sometimes make me uncomfortable, like when they're mad. I hoped that she wasn't mad at me for whatever I had done, which was nothing. "I would like to ask you for a favor, Zoe" she said, looking me in the eye. "Oh, I thought I was in trouble or something" I said with relief.
"Who told you that?" she asked. I looked down at my shoes, "No one, I just assumed". Like I mentioned before, I needed to stop assuming the worst. "Well you're not, you're a great student" she said, smiling. "Really? Gee, thanks Mrs. Tate". "Anytime" she said, "And I wanted to ask you to do a little job for me, just for a little while". "What's that?" I asked. "Well you see, as a school, we need a nice, tidied hall and I was wondering if you could clean the hallways once every day of the week" she explained. What kind of question was that? And why was she asking me to do it? I wasn't a janitor. "I don't know, Mrs. Tate, I-" she cut me off by saying "Did I mention that you will get extra credit for helping". I didn't want to be rude by refusing. "I guess I'll do it". "Now that's good, sweetie" she said. I also made me feel uncomfortable when adults called me nicknames, but I just tried to be nice anyway. "You can start tomorrow". I looked at my watch. "I've got to get to cheer practice" I told her. "Alright" she said, "I will see you tomorrow". "Bye". That was enough for me, but at least I wasn't in trouble or anything. After the cheer meet, I hung out with Cleo at the mall. I had told her what Mrs. Tate had wanted and about the extra credit. "I think it's gonna help the school" she said, "not that I care". That didn't surprise me. School wasn't exactly Cleos favorite place to be. "I didn't really want to, but I didn't want to be rude either" I said to her. "Zoe, you need to learn how to tell people what you want or you're never gonna get it, like that date you want with Dustin". "I know" I said, sighing, "it's not easy though". She looked surprised, "How so? All you have to do is ask". We were walking, side by side and I stopped, looked her in the eye and said "You know, it's easy for you to say, Cleo. You've had dozens of boyfriends". "Okay, sorry" she said quickly, "I guess it is different for you". She broke eye contact with me and pulled out her phone from her pocket and started texting. I felt ignored. "What are you doing?"
"Texting" she replied. Duh, I knew that.
"Who"I asked, looking over her shoulder. She hid her phone. "Do you really wanna know?" I crossed my arms. "Yeah, tell me". She showed me her phone, she had been texting Tabitha. "Cleo!" "What?!" As if she didn't know what. "You know I don't like her" I said. "Come on, Zoe, you gotta give her a chance. She's totally cool, once you get to know her". I gave her the "Are you serious?" face. She rolled her eyes, "look, if you don't like her, then that's too bad because I do. So you're gonna have to be okay with that". She was right. I was acting so childish. "Im sorry", I said, "it's just that I don't want her to try to fool you or anything". Cleo looked confused. "Why would she try fooling me?" "There's just something about her that I don't trust" I said. "Wow Zoe, that's pretty judgmental" she said. Now I looked confused "What? How so?"
"Well first off, you still barely know her". She was right about that. "Okay, okay" I said, "I'll give her a chance". Cleo smiled, "Good, cause I'm inviting her to hang out with us"she said, pulling out her phone again. "Fine" I said, calmly. It couldn't go that bad, could it?************************************
