Sentenced To Eternity
Chapter 5
Alise's Point of View
Morning struck Heaven brighter than any place I had ever been to. Silver-gold light streamed in through the windows nearly blinding me as I opened my green eyes. The swirling/sinking feeling that had engulfed me throughout the night which was now fading as the light became brighter. I rolled over a little to the right.
Immediately I hit the cold wooden floor face first. I flopped over onto my back groaning. Shuttin my eyes trying in vain, I was trying to block out the pain of hitting a cold wooden floor face first.
"Wake up," whispered a sweet voice in my head. I groaned loudly.
I felt someone breathing on my face, soft hair tickled my cheeks. I opened my eyes and saw the messenger woman with her head a mere three inches from my face. The perfect white smile that practically oozed fake happiness covered her face. I shut my eyes again not wanting to be intoxicated by her fake joy. "Alise," she said out loud this time. "Get up sweetie; it's time for your trial."
I rolled over onto my side.
Why would my trial be so early in the morning?
This was so unfair.
How could anyone be awake and prepared to defend themselves when they were half asleep?
Or maybe that's what they're aiming for.
Either way, I wasn't planning on going and being accused of a crime far beyond me, arguing a bit, getting yelled at, arguing some more, and then being sent to bloody Hell.
This was so not a Democracy!
"Get up, and that is not what we are aiming to do!" she whispered now a little bit more sharply.
I could tell people not listening to her wasn't something she was used to, but this girl was NEEDED to get her beauty sleep. "Get your butt off the floor!" she said aggressively.
"Fine!" I yelled. "Whatever you want, sweetie!" I mocked her, opening my eyes. The messenger was steaming with fury. She opened her mouth like she wanted to say some great come-back, but nothing really came out. She shut it. I sat up. The walls around me were snow-white with thin gold curtains opened wide at each window. The floor was wooden and a dark chocolate color. All the beds had slivery feather pillows and thin golden sheets with a silvery quilt over top. All the beds except for mine, actually. I realized that I was still wearing my hospital gown. This was something that I hadn't realized throughout my entire trip. Out of pure instinct I reached back to pull the two sides of the hospital gown together. The messenger laughed.
"I was wondering when you would realize."
I frowned.
"So what am I wearing to the trial?" I asked while still holding my hospital gown. The messenger held out her hand and a pale black dress materialized in it. The cuffs of the sleeves were lined with silver stitches. The neckline formed a V that looked like it went down just far enough to be embarrassing. "Uh," I said. "Not going to happen."
"It's this or the hospital gown." she had a sideways smile, almost like she wanted me to wear a hospital gown and be completely embareassed.
My frown got bigger as I snatched the dress from her hand.
~~~~~
"Why is the dress black? We're in Heaven! Isn't everything is supposed to be white and. . . well. . . Heavenly."
The messenger laughed quietly. "It's black because right now you aren't in Heaven. It's true that the place I am walking on is Heaven, but to you nowhere you step is Heaven. Only those who have gone through the process of the trial and pass can walk on Heaven. They feel the wonders, excitement, and Heavenliness of it all while you feel nothing out of the ordinary. And because of this you wear black to represent that you are not yet part of this."
It was a lot to take in.
Everything she said seemed to enter one ear and come out the other.
I wasn't in Heaven, but she was even though we were walking right next to each other.
Wait. . . what?
"I have a couple more questions," I said.
She gestured in a way that said, continue.
"What's your name?"
She smiled a smile that threatened to fall off her face.
"It is Evelyn Blair Jones. At least that's what it was before I died. When you die you become whatever you want to be. So really I'm not Evelyn anymore, I'm the person I always dreamed of being. And since I never gave that person a name I will remain nameless. But you can call me Evy anyway." I never thought that an angel would rebel.
"So, Evy, why are we walking? Can't you just take out some of your magic fairy dust and zap us into court?"
"I could, but that would be against that rules. Besides, I want to talk to you."
I ignored the part about her wanting to talk to me by asking yet another question. "Why would it be against the rules?" I asked.
"As I told you, when you travel at the speed of light you see the future. There is the chance that you would see your own trial and that would assist you in doing better."
I didn't understand how seeing my trial could help me do any better. It would probably just discourage me to see myself failing and going down to Hell.
"I heard that," said Evy.
I looked at my feet, my face reddening.
"You're not going to fail. Sure, the Judges are skeptical but they are also willing to hear your side of the story. If you really didn't do it you can most likey convince them so."
"Can't they like look through my mind and find out if I did it or not?" I asked.
"It doesn't work like that. Someone could convince themselves they didn't do it or simply they could forget whether or not they did it and then the judges would consider them unguilty and it would be a large mess. So as soon as you enter the court during trial no one can read your mind."
I shook my head in understanding.
It wasn't fair.
I never did anything.
Yet still, I was recieving a trial that decided whether or not I was going to Hell. A place that I had never imagined even in my wildest dreams I would go to. I looked into the distance for the courthouse, being entirely too tired of Evy and I's little walk. I could faintly see its out line in the distance. So probably about five hundred more steps. "So you no longer want to go on this walk?" Evy asked sounding hurt.
"No, no, I'm just tired," I lied.
"Don't even try to lie to me," she replied. But this time, she was not joking around.
~~~~~
Five hundred awkward steps later. . .
Goosebumps covered my tanned arms as I stepped into the courtroom. As before, many large baby-men sat everywhere. Though to my surprise, there was an attractive girl with wavy red hair sitting off into a corner, a darkhaired messenger/angel sat to the girl's right and the seat to her left was empty. From my position I could see the girl was shivering like mad. Her hazel eyes were darting around the room. They rested briefly on me before they began to dart around again. Evy grabbed my arm and led me towards the girl. She sat me down at her left and then Evy sat to my right.
The large baby-man, that I assumed was the judge, banged his mallet.
In the temporary noise I whispered in the girl's ear, "I'm Alise."
Quickly she replied, "Sophie."
Just as she did so, the judge looked over to me and growled.
