Sentenced To Eternity
Chapter 10
Alise's Point of View
Rain poured off the roof of St. Dickson’s Church, forming huge puddles on the pavement. People with umbrellas and raincoats with matching boots called to each other, hurrying across the parking lot. I gripped my Mother’s hand tightly as we sprinted, under our yellow umbrella and into the Church. I sat down on the comfy red cushion of the Church, trying hard not to get it wet. My tiny legs dangled in the air, not yet reaching the floor.
“Mommy, who’s that on the wall?” I asked pointing.
“That’s God, He lives in Heaven” she replies.
“Oh yeah, Heaven is for good people, right?” I asked.
My Mother nodded, staring at the wall, amazement in her eyes. We were here for my cousin's First Communion. Other than that, our family rarely goes to Church, we just don’t have the time, but I still have quite a large amount of knowledge about God.
“Right, Heaven is for the good people,” my Mother whispered.
“Then where do the bad people go, Mommy? They can’t go to Heaven, that would be unfair,” I said with a giggle. My Mother smiled.
“The bad people go to Hell and the good people go to Heaven,” she answered.
“Will I go to Hell, Mommy?” I asked.
“No baby, as long as you're nice and caring, you'll be sent up to Heaven,” she whispered, squeezing my hand.
As long as you’re nice and caring, you'll be sent up to Heaven.
'Sent up to Heaven.' My Mother’s words echoed off the Church walls again and again. 'Sent up to Heaven. Sent up to Heaven.'
I opened my eyes. The Church slowly disappeared as my cell came into focus. What used to be a slowly shrinking death-trap that made my worst fears come alive was now what I considered a cell, since it so greatly resembled a jail cell. It took all of my will-power to avoid the tremors of claustropia. The side of my face was ice cold from being pressed against the floor, it was almost stuck. I peeled it off, leaving a red mark on my cheek. The walls were now normal and the floor was. . . cold? Freezing actually.
All my life I had been nice and caring. I had tried, I really had tried, to be a good person.
Now, it didn’t matter, I was actually here, in Hell. I had let my Mother down. I hadn’t gone to Heaven.
Tears dripped down my face.
“Life’s not fair,” I whispered.
No, life was fair. This was unfair. This whole thing was a waste of time, whatever they called “Court” was just plain wrong.
“This is wrong!” I yelled standing up. “All this is unfair! It’s crazy and wrong!” I screamed pounding on the walls with my fists. “You hear me? Huh? You’re doing it all wrong!” I yelled.
Suddenly there was a loud screeching noise. It was so horribly loud I thought I might be permanently deaf. I screamed in pain as I covered my ears.
EEEEEEEERRRRRRRCCCCCCHHH!!!!!
It was the most horrible sound I had ever heard. The walls of my small cell started to shake. EEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRCCCCCCCCHHHH!!!!!!!
My heart pounded harder. I became scared and started to lose control and hyperventilate. Maybe I had ticked off Satan. Of all people to take out my anger on, Satan was not the one to understand.
