Sentenced To Eternity
Chapter 17
Alise's Point of View
An elderly man stepped out of the Base. He had white hair that went to his shoulders in fuzzy tufts. His face was dark with dirt and what looked to be blood. He wore what appeared to be a night shirt and khaki dress pants. Dirt and remnants of a variety of colors were on the shirt. It was now a tan color. His face was contorted in annoyance.
"Ever heard of ducking?" he exclaimed as he spread his hands in exasperation. "That was my bullet. Just practicing was all," he muttered before turning around to speak to a woman who had come out of the large Base. She had short hair and a rugged face.
"They'll need at least three weeks of training. What's your decision?" he asked her.
"Toss them. They'll take up my time and Andrew's. We need to be fighting. We only have three hundred to go. Melissa in no fit for battle. I need to spend time on her, when not fighting," she said all of this calmly as if she wasn't speaking of deaths. Did we just travel three miles to be tossed? I thought.
"How old are you, thirteen?" Oh, so now I'm in the conversation.
"Sixteen actually, sir. And when I'm fighting from now on I'll expect a gun shot from my own Team." I smiled.
"Says the girl who didn't duck when a bullet was flying towards her." The man smiled. "Lane, show them to their quarters."
Lane guided them into the Base. It was remarkably vacant. There were no chairs or appliances. The walls were made of a dark wood. In the right corner of the room the dark dirt floor was covered with clothing. There looked to be five t-shirts.
"That's where the people who are on guard sit. Two people are on guard at a time. One may sleep if they want. But they cannot sleep the whole shift. You will start taking shifts when your training is done," explained Lane. She ran her hand through her short black hair.
She led them into a hallway leading off of the room. She pointed to the first door in the dark hallway.
"That's Melissa's room. She's recovering." I gulped and looked at Franz.
"Who are we fighting?" I asked quietly.
"Other teams, and the demons. Ten thousand kills and you get to protect a loved one for a month. We only have three hundred more to go." She held back tears on the last part.
"That next room is where you'll stay. And the room after that is where anyone who isnt on guard will stay. You both need rest. I'll introduce you to Andrew and Melissa tomorrow. Goodnight." She nodded at us.
The room we were instructed to enter was cold, and dark. It was uniform with the rest of the house. The dark walls and floor were kept plain with no furniture. The floor would be our bed.

I sat in the left corner hugging her knees to fight the cold. Franz had taken refuge by the door and was lying down. The quiet was chilling. This was the first time in awhile that I didn't have something terrifying preoccupying my thoughts. I turned to Franz. Why is he here? I suddenly felt odd for not wondering what landed him in Hell. I had been quite busy.
"Why are you here?" Franz looked up suddenly at me. The noise was a sudden break in the glass of silence. He simply looked back down. I began to wonder if he heard me. I waited.
"For killing my daughter." The sound of it made him shudder, but I could tell it was the truth. Though something in his eyes hinted that that wasn't all.
"But I didn't do it." Franz looked me straight in the eye. He seemed to need me to believe him.
"I need to tell you something."
"Well?" I was worried now. What did he have to say?
"They (They?) weren't as strict back then. When I had my trial. They let you walk to the hearings from your cell by yourself. On my way to the first day I got lost. I tried to listen for voices, maybe that would lead me towards the trial. The source of the noise was coming from a slightly open door. I saw a handsome man in a suit and a large baby like person speaking to each other. I decided to wait for them to be done before entering. But then I heard the Devil. He said 'Are you ready?' But then they didn't speak. I turned to look and some green light or fluid, or something was going from the Devil's arm into the Judge. And right before my eyes the Judge became thinner. Then after it was done the Judge told him he'd send more of 'Them' down." Franz did quotation marks with his hands. He shuddered and breathed heavily.
"He said that today he had a trial and he'd make sure to find him guilty. Don't you understand? He was talking about me." Franz started to cry.
"Then, then, then he, Satan, he said that all the extra citizens power was making him feel better then years. That power, the liquid light stuff, he gets it from us. The more of us here the better he feels." Franz was sobbing too hard to speak.
"Probably half of us are innocent." That was the last thing he said before turning away from me and whispered to himself again. He kept praying. Did God receive prayers from "citizens" of Hell?
