Sentenced To Eternity

Chapter 16

Alise's Point of View

I felt a stabbing pain in my back, it ran up my spine and down my legs.

This is it. I was not a demon.

They didn’t trust me.

I was going to endure torture, like everybody else. I took a shaky breath and stepped forward.

“No!” Franz’s hand shot out in front of me.

Crackle.

I looked down to see a huge rocky cliff, and by huge I mean huge. Never in my life have I ever seen anything deeper. Not Niagara Falls, not the Grand Cannon, not a cave…not anything! I couldn’t even see the bottom.

The base was on the other side.

“No” I whispered, looking down.

“No!” The scream echoed down off the walls.  I became hyper, spinning around. We were on a small ledge, right where the gate opened up. A ledge no bigger than four feet across. I could barely hold my footing.  There was no escaping.

The only way, was down.

I looked over at Franz, but he wasn’t there. Instead he was curled up in a ball again, shivering against the gate. Terrified.

“Franz?” I asked.

“So high, so high. I can’t do it Alise, I can’t! They knew it, they knew my fear! Why this? I can’t do it!” He screamed.

Then it dawned on me, Franz was afraid of heights. Who wasn’t?  Who in their right mind would want to jump to their death?

The thought made me shiver, more tears ran down my face.

“We have to,” I whispered. Sitting down next to him.  “It will be quick, I promise. This is actually better, they could stab us or something. I mean think about it! We will be in the air, flying.   You've already done it once, just do it again.  But this time, you get to fly!” I say.

“Flying.” He repeats. I nod.

“Then when we hit, it will be so quick, we won’t suffer at all!” I exclaim. He smiles, and stands up.

“Alise, lets fly!” Franz holds out his hand, a new attitude in his voice.

I take it.

We both take one last look, then jump.

“AHHHHHH!” I screamed at the top of my lungs as I plunge into complete darkness.

“WHOOOOHHH!” Franz screamed, but of joy, not fear.

Whoosh! Whoosshhh! SSSHHHH! Wind pounded at my face, so very hard. I couldn’t open my eyes, I just kept them closed.

I was falling. Down. Down. Down. Down. Down.

It was forever.

I loved it!

Five minutes past.  Suddenly it became lighter. I heard voices.

Oh no!

“AHHH!” I screamed bloody murder, because I knew death was coming.

I saw it, I saw the ground. Closer. Closer. Closer!!!!

“FRAN-

I hit.

~~~~~
Silence.
Darkness.
It hadn’t worked.
I was really dead! Was this what it felt like? It could get boring, just sitting here. But I guess it is better than Hell.
I, Alise, have officially died twice!
Man, you usually don’t say that!
Rinnngg.  I heard it now. I sharp ringing noise.
“Alise!” Light. Blurriness. It was coming back. No, if only it would go away.
“Alise!” Everything came into focus, and I woke up.
Franz was shaking me. We were at the top on the cliff. “No!” I cried, tears pouring down my face.  “I wish I was in Heaven, or dead.” I say. That was speaking the obvious, but it was the truth. I took deep breathes in and out.
I was alive, or…dead. But no, I had just died, I’m in Hell. Okay…so I guess I’m both.
“That’s what dieing feels like.” Franz whispered.
“Do you think it was fun?” I said smiling.
He nodded. “Sort of.”
“Do it again?” I asked.
He shook his head. “No, it’s getting dark and people might attack. We should get to base.”
I nodded. But I could tell he really wanted to jump again. That was the closest to fun you could ever get here.
We turned around. Behind us, about five miles out, was a building. A small building. Really small. Or was it just so far away?
I heard screams and became scared.  “Come on, lets get going” Franz started walking.
 I followed.
We walked at a brisk pace, right out across the field. Exposed to everything. I don’t know how to describe how we felt, I mean, how I felt.
I was scared, but at the same time….I don’t know. The fact that I will be coming back to life-er- coming back to hell sort of reassured me. I guess.
Surprisingly, we made it. It wasn’t quite as far as Franz had judged, only about three miles. The base was a small building, made of wood. Or what used to be wood.
Now, it was a dark red, stained with blood.
It was dark, and the chill made me shiver.  No sign of life, anywhere. The blood may just be red paint, but I didn’t think so.
“Franz?” I whispered. He nodded.
“Never again will we ever die in vain.” The words rang out into the night.  Sounding wrong, but they were the truth.
That’s when a bullet pierced one of the Base's wooden walls, inches from my head. . .
