Sentenced To Eternity
Chapter 18
Satan's Point of View
God seemed to radiate light. His clothing was so incredibly bright I was nearly blinded. "Satan, there have been. . . complaints about your ruling in Hell," rumbled God, in a clear, smooth voice. I felt myself stiffen in my seat. I felt my face heat up in anger.
"They should keep their da-" I felt my words run silent as my mouth numbed to the point where I could o longer feel my tongue, as always when I cussed in God's Domain; Heaven. No words came out of my mouth as I continued to try and speak. I clenched my fists in anger. He had no right to silence me.
God sighed lightly. "Please, Satan, control your temper. . . and tongue."
I closed my mouth and waited a moment. Soon feeling pulsed through my mouth. "You should warn people to watch the rumors they spread. I am not one to be threatened," I said coolly, my temper now under control.
"Satan, I don't believe this is much a threat, merely a precaution."
"They're clearly imposing on my business."
"Yes, imposing, not threatening."
I clenched my jaw, He had a point. Of course.
"A few Messengers heard conversations between you and a few of my Judges. They claim that there is something rather - how should I put this - suspicious going on in both my Domain and yours."
I bit down on my tongue to prevent myself from shouting profanities. "What are they accusing me of doing?" I asked, a dangerous edge behind my smooth voice.
A smile played at the edges of God's lips. "They seem to think that the Judges are falsely sentencing people, I suppose, to an eternity in Hell to bring your Domain more power."
"Almost an eternity. There are points when even the damned need breaks."
God nodded. "I am aware, but I would like you to answer this question for me, without lies. Are these accusations the truth, or simply false."
I nearly scoffed. You could never trust the Devil not to lie. "False, obviously. Why would any Judge give up an eternity in Heaven to help the rise of Hell?" A breezy smile appeared on God's face as he interlaced his fingers atop the table, leaning slightly forward.
"There are reasons," he whispered.
"Explain," I said calmly.
"I'm afraid you are already aware."
"Do excuse my fading memory, I would enjoy hearing them again." I grinned, my eyes glinting mischievously. There were surely plenty more reasons God could list that I couldn't think of to bribe the Judges with, if they ever grew tired of my promise for power.
God's eyes narrowed, but he responded anyway. "Names - some people don't want to change their names, even if it was a name they wanted their entire lifetime. Mind Reading - human thoughts are not always pleasant to listen to. Dirty Work - Messengers don't always enjoy having to retrieve sobbing souls from Earth and telling them they're dead, and will never speak to their family again. Even if it is that person's time to pass. Visiting Hell - people and messages always need to be sent down there and the Angels and Messenger are the ones to do it. I think that's about it."
I smiled, unconvincingly. "I'm sure no one would willingly betray you. Now I must go, I do have a Domain to run," I said curtly. I pushed back my chair from the table and exited the room. The moment I was out of God's sight I snapped my fingers and disappeared into thin air.
