Chapter 20

It's been quiet; too quiet, actually. A whole month has passed since my mother's incident. My dad finally got out of bed two days ago. He finally spoke without sobbing at the end of the sentence. My tears dried up after crying for a week straight. I can't cry now even if I wanted to.

My dad wasn't able to continue as beta, but it didn't matter anyways. Liam was given the Alpha position of the pack and Jason was named beta. There were hardly smiles on our faces anymore. Everyone was grave and serious, awaiting another attack from Morgan so we could rip their heads off.

But the attack never came. Morgan's pack stayed hidden in the shadows and it was unnerving.

I knew he was watching us; some way or another. I just wish I knew how.

"Hey, you okay?" Liam sidled up to me as I walked down the hallway to my next class.

Nodding, I lied, "Fine. Just thinking."

"About what?" He questioned.

I sighed, "Morgan's pack."

Liam scowled, "I hate him so much."

"We all do," I stopped, pulling him towards me and pecking him on the lips, "Stop scowling. It doesn't look good on you?"

He pulled back, dumbfounded, "Was that a joke?"

Shrugging, I turned away from him and walked into Chemistry, the last class of the day, thankfully.

Glancing over at Jill, I saw her slump in her seat, pinching the bridge of her nose.

"You okay?" I asked.

She looked up at me and sighed, "Josh went out of town with his family and it's really taking a toll on me, I guess."

I frowned, "Sorry. You can come over after school if you want? Distract yourself from him."

Thinking about it, she finally nodded, "I guess that would be good for the both of us."

"Definitely," I agreed.

Chemistry flew by and soon Jill and I were driving back to my house. As we pulled in, I noticed my dad's car was gone. The corners of my mouth lifted up ever so slightly; he was finally getting out of the house.

You see, when your mate dies, it's hard to live without them because they were like your other half. If you're an alpha and your mate dies, you die from the pain of missing them because a bond between an alpha and luna is much stronger than an ordinary mate bond.

So basically, if I died so would Liam, and vice versa.

Cheery, right?

"So what do you wanna do?" Jill asked as we shuffled into the living room. Walking over to the entertainment center, I pulled out a DVD and held it up.

"Wanna watch?"

She chuckled, "Sure."

So we sat down and let ourselves actually laugh at the characters of Despicable Me-- with popcorn, of course.

Everyone in the pack sat in the room. We were currently in the pack house, everyone here for the emergency pack meeting that Liam had called. I sat down next to Jason and Jill behind him while he stood in front of everyone else.

He cleared his throat, "Good evening, everyone. I'm sure you're all wondering why I called this meeting to order."

Everyone mumbled their agreements and he continued, "Well, I believe we've been having trouble recovering from the recent attack on our pack.

"I think we need to fix that. We're all sad and depressed, which is what I'm sure Morgan wants. He wants us at our lowest before he crushes us. It makes sense, doesn't it?" He paused and it was dead quiet, "I say we start smiling again. We need to be as one again, stop bringing ourselves down. That's just leading ourselves to destruction. Of course, this doesn't mean forgetting about him. We'll still be on our toes, we'll just be smiling while doing so. Kill them with kindness, right?"

People began muttering as the thought over what Liam had said.

"Quiet!" Liam bellowed and everyone silenced immediately, "So what do you say?"

No one said a thing.

Unsure of where the sudden burst of courage came from, I stood up and walked next to Liam. Intertwining our hands, I gave him a small smile before facing the massive crowd, "I'm with Liam on this. It's not about how many times you get down. It's about how you get back up."

Jill and Jason stood up, standing beside us. Our friends out in the crowd stood up and gradually, the entire room stood up.

I smiled at the movement.

"With this new mood, there will be a pack barbecue tonight," Liam announced and a couple people hooted, causing me to chuckle. As everyone dispersed from the room, he wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling me to him, "Thank you for helping me."

"What kind of a girlfriend would I be if I didn't?" I joked.

Liam chuckled, "A horrible one."

"I missed being happy," I admitted.

"Then be happy," He mumbled before capturing my lips with his. Kissing back, we were interrupted at a knock at the door.

It was Jason, "You guys, uh, coming?"

He rubbed the back of his neck.

Laughing, we nodded and walked out to the beautifully decorated back yard of the pack house. I smiled when I smelled the food, "The food smells delicious."

Liam kissed my forehead, "That would be what you say."

Instead of coming back with a smart retort, I just stuck my tongue out.

I then proceeded to drag him to the buffet with me. I was hungry; so what?
