Chapter 5
I peeled my eyes open and looked at the clock. 6:29.
It changed to six thirty and my alarm went off. Groaning, I turned it off and swung my legs over the side of my bed. I could've had an extra minute of sleep.
Yawning, I stood up and shuffled across the room and into the bathroom. Without looking at my reflection, I squirted toothpaste on my toothbrush and began brushing my teeth, eyes groggy. I looked up into the mirror and saw my hair was in disarray. Rinsing my mouth out and washing my face, I shuffled back out to my room and sat down, running a brush through my hair.
Pulling out my flat iron, I straightened my hair to the point where it was pin-straight. Triumphant, I walked into my closet to find an outfit for today. I decided on a pair of white, lace, high-waisted shorts and a navy blue v-neck t-shirt. I slipped on the outfit and added a pair of black flats. Making my way back into my bathroom, I put on a light layer of mascara and eyeliner before grabbing my bag and walking downstairs.
"Morning," I chirped and Jason just nodded his head.
I rolled my eyes at him.
Grabbing an apple from the fridge, I rinsed it off and took a bite out of it. Red apples are the best, way better than green apples.
My phone buzzed and I pulled it out of my back pocket. It was a text from Jill, saying she would pick us up with Danny. I replied telling her it was cool before sliding my phone back in my pocket and finishing my apple at the same time Jason finished his cereal.
Cinnamon Toast Crunch. He calls me childish?
"Jill and Danny are picking us up today," I told him.
He nodded then looked up, "Who's Danny?"
"A friend. She was standing with me yesterday, you know, two brunettes drunk out of their minds?" I told him and he just shrugged, shaking his head. I sighed and rolled my eyes; you can always count on older brothers to be unobservant.
A car horn beeped outside and I stood up from my seat. Jason trailing behind me, I skipped down the steps of our front porch, I waved to Jill and Danny. Climbing in the back seat, Jason was frozen on the spot as he stared at the car. Danny stared at him and I looked at Jill. She winked at me.
"Hey, Danny, why don't you sit in the back with my brother, you two can get to know each other," I teased. She nodded her head and stepped out of the car, not even looking away from Jason. Rolling my eyes I slid into the passenger seat and watched as Danny and Jason sat in the back next to each other.
"I'm Danny," She greeted him, sticking out her hand.
He didn't take it, "Jason," He breathed and kissed her on the lips. Fake gagging, I faced forwards as we drove down the road. She kissed back and I wondered how they could when they didn't even know each other. I guess that's what happens when you find your mate-- I wouldn't know, though.
"So how's Josh?" I asked Jill and she beamed.
"Perfect," She sighed and an emotion flickered over her eyes. I laughed and glanced at the backseat where Danny had her head rested on Jason's shoulder and they were talking quietly to each other, fingers interlocked.
"Thank god! I would've exploded from too much romance!" I shout as I hurry out of the car. Jill walks in through the school with me, "Agreed."
"Where's Liam been? I haven't seen him all day," I ask Jill. She sighs, shaking her head.
"He was pretty upset last night when he didn't find his mate. He'll probably be here soon, though," She tells me.
I nod, "Well, maybe she's on her way! Like, a new girl will just show up tomorrow and she'll be his mate and then they can live happily ever after!"
Jill laughs and nods, "Totally, because that's so likely, too."
"It really is," I tell her, bobbing my head up and down.
Danny and Jason sit a table over by themselves, eating each other instead of their food. Gag.
Cat comes and joins us, holding the heel of her hand to her temple, "I'm really wishing I didn't drink all that alcohol last night."
"You're a lightweight," Drew said, sitting down next to me and across from Cat, "I mean look at Danny, she's doing just fine!"
"Not everyone is fortunate enough to find their mate after a killer hangover," She grumbled and we laughed.
Josh was the next to sit down and he sat next to Jill, kissing her, "Hey, babe."
"Hi," She replies giggling, a blush forming on her face. I roll my eyes.
"We're surrounded by love birds," I tell Drew and he agrees.
Justin joins us and sits next to Drew, "Damn what a party last night."
"Glad you enjoyed it," Cat remarked and he smirked, winking.
"You didn't stay very long, Faith," he turns to me.
I felt uneasy under his gaze, "Yeah, my brother had to get home and he was my ride..."
Justin nodded, "I see."
I wish he couldn't, a voice said in the back of my head.
I finished my last fry and stood up, walking over to the trash can to throw my lunch away. I went back to the table and found Cat's head laying down, eyes clothes. I rolled my eyes and yelled "Cat!"
Her eyes flew open and she sat up, "What!?"
"Nothing, you just fell asleep," I told her with a smirk. She mock glared at me and threw a grape at me, which I caught in my mouth with ease.
"Nice move!" Drew exclaimed and high fives me, earning him a grape to the forehead from Cat.
It was my turn to mock glare at her, "Stop throwing grapes, woman!"
"Make me!" She shot back sarcastically and stood up to throw the remainder of her lunch away.
The bell rang and I walked out of lunch with Cat. We had History next; a balding sixty year old man droning about unnecessary facts. Sounds like fun, right? Wrong.
We sat down in the back but the seat to my right was empty-- it was Liam's seat. Sighing, I turned back to Cat, "Have you found your mate yet?"
She shakes her head, "I don't turn seventeen for another month and a half."
I lift my head in understanding before looking up to the front where Mr. Bennett was talking about WWI. No one was paying attention besides the five try hards at the front of the room who were furiously scribbling across the paper as they tried to take down every word he says.
"--And it was started with the assassination of Austria's Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife--" Mr. Bennett was cut off when the door to the classroom swung open. Heads snapped up and girls craned their necks to look into the person's eyes for a second chance.
It was Liam.
He slumped down in his seat next to me. Mr. Bennett continued as though there wasn't an interruption. I glance over at him and he was staring down at his desk, eyebrows furrowed in concentration.
"Sorry you never found her," I told him, placing my hand on his shoulder.
A spark flew through my fingers to the rest of my body and I pulled my hand back. His head snapped to me and he looked me in the eye.
Mate.
My wolf howled in delight.
