Chapter 28

LIAM'S P.O.V

A sharp pain went through my pinkie finger as though it were breaking. Jumping, I looked to it and moved it around-- it wasn't broken. My head had a dull ache and my wrists and ankles fell as if they were on fire. Was this Faith's pain I was feeling?

"Let's move out," I ordered and everyone bowed their heads in respect before hurrying over to formation. Shifting into my wolf, I growled before leaping forwards and running through the woods, easily dodging all of the familiar trees. As we neared Morgan's territory, I slowed down and came to a stop at the edge. My pack followed suit and I called to Jason through mind link, Your guys good?

All set. You give the word, we'll back you up, He answered. Setting my paw over onto his territory, I crept onto the land until my whole wolf was there. My strike team followed and kept slightly behind me, ready for an attack. Two smaller wolves popped out at us, lunging with jaws wide open. We quickly took them down and began running forward to their pack house.

The ten people of my team burst onto their training ground where they were waiting. Of course they were waiting. Letting out a shallow howl, I charged forward and soon I could hear panic from inside the house. People were screaming, not expecting us yet expecting us at the same time.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a small black wolf charging at me. As it lunged, I snapped my jaws and sent it spiraling out of control. It hit a tree and whimpered before slumping down. Unconscious, but not dead.

Hearing a growl from behind me, I whipped around to find Justin growling at me. He was furious and livid. What did I ever do to him? I saw the black wolf limp over, consciousness regained and stare at Justin before walking away. But I recognized the wolf's scent. Maddie

So Justin was mad because I had hurt Maddie. Was she his mate?

I didn't have time to think it through because he loaded back on his hind legs before jumping at me. Using my paw to knock him aside, I took a bite of his leg to keep him down but not kill before charging towards the house. My pack was advancing, taking out Morgan's people easily.

A wolf bigger than any of the others, brown in color, stood before me, blocking my way to the house. He growled, snapping his jaws as if to intimidate me. I only growled louder, overpowering him and causing many nearby wolves to cower in fear.

This wolf was Morgan, and I wanted him dead. I could faintly smell her scent on him which only fueled my anger.

If wolves could smile, that would explain what he was doing right now. He was trying to get to me, as if saying that he won already, and it almost worked. Almost.

Has anyone located Faith yet? I shouted through the pack link.

No one responded, meaning the answer was no.

I looked Morgan into the eyes and felt a growl come from my chest, growing and expanding in loudness. His eyes dilated slightly, as if in fear, for a split second before going back to normal. He growled back, but he looked weak compared to me. I had a better motivation to fight whereas he only had his life at risk. I have a mate that needs saving.

I refused to make the first move and he knew that. We circled each other for what seemed like eternities before a flicker of movement caught my eye. His back leg muscle twitching. bracing myself, I let him jump at me and crouched down below him, raking my claws against him, causing him to howl in pain as he landed.

Morgan was quick to recover and he was soon back on all fours, eyes narrowed and focused on me. He pounced again and I caught his leg in my canines, ripping off flesh. I spit his blood out and growled. He got up again and as he readied himself to pounce, I beat him to it. Taking my paw and striking where his heart was, I felt it go all the way through his body and pulled it back, blood on my leg and paw.

He fell backwards and laid on his side, breathing shallow breaths until his heart eventually stopped, his vacant eyes staring ahead but unseeing.

Barking loudly, my original team finished their opponents and sauntered into the building with me. Taking a pair of shorts from Alyssa who had already shifted, I quickly transformed back into human form and slipped on the shorts.

Breathing in the air, I found her scent and nodded, "She's definitely here."

I followed the strength of her scent, Alyssa, Josh, Drew and Danny behind me. We ended up in the basement, white cement walls, floor and ceilings surrounding us. There was a single door at the end of the hall. Jogging towards it, I kicked it open, making the people in there scream in fear. They were quick to shift, but Danny took them out with silver blow darts-- her choice weapon when in human form.

Her scent was strong here, stronger than anywhere. Looking around, I noted that we were in a lab, but my mate was nowhere to be seen.

"Where is she?" I growled.

Josh sighed, "Relax. We'll find her. You would know if she died, Liam."

"Yeah," Alyssa nodded in agreement.

"She's a fighter," Danny added, "She wouldn't let them do anything to her."

Drew smiled sadly, "Plus, she still has a math test tomorrow."

I scoffed at the last comment, but for some reason, it lifted my spirits, if even just a little. As I walked around the room, looking for any signs of her, I could feel the traces of pain I'd felt earlier growing more intense.

My wolf whined-- our mate was in pain and there was nothing I could do right now to help her. Growling in frustration, I swept a desk with my arms, causing everything to fly off. Pounding my fist down on the table, I bent my head down and tried to focus on her. I tried to get into her head, see where she was, but all that did was make the fire in my wrists and ankles hurt worse.

Sighing, I took a deep breath and looked up to see my friends looking at me and between each other with worried looks. I shook my head, "I'm fine, guys. I'd just be a lot better if Faith were here with me."

"It doesn't make sense," Alyssa speaks up, "I mean, her scent is the strongest here. We'd be able to tell if they took her somewhere else, right?"

Danny nodded, "Yeah, Liam would be able to pin point her anywhere."

"Wouldn't that mean she's here then?" I asked, slightly irritated.

"Help!" A sudden scream for help interrupted us and my heart started pounding in my chest. It was her
