Her footsteps echoed in her ears. She focused hard on the thumping they made.
Thump. Thump. Thump.
She dug her hands deep into the pockets of her dark red coat. It was chilly today.
Thump. Thump. Thump.
If only she had a bigger coat.
Thump. Thump. Thump.
She glanced down at her watch and frowned.
8:30.
She needed to get home. Immediately. After that, the woman decided to take a right at the end of the road. There she came across a road block.
The scanners.
How she dreaded them. Sure, she had to use one everyday, but she still didn't like them.
As she approached the scanner, a guard gave her a nod. "Betta." "James." "That coat looks a little cold." "Yeah, well, I forgot my heavy jacket at home. At least I'm not out here all day." They both shared a chuckle. Betta approached the scanner. James took off his helmet to reveal a sweaty, yet handsome, man, "Boss man says if you do this a few more times without being positive, you could join the force."
Betta grinned, "Really? That'd be awesome! I'll finally get out of that cramped office!" "I know. That's why I already turned in a request form." James flashed his pearly whites at the young African American woman. "You did?" "Yep. All the boss says is that you must get through a few of these." "That shouldn't be a problem. I'm negative all those other times, aren't I?"
James nodded, "I really wish you didn't have to do this. I know you're not one of those freaks." "I get it. It's regulation." "Glad you understand."
Betta placed her hand down on the scanner, waiting for the screen to scan red like usual. But, instead of the scan turning red, the screen flashed a bright green. Betta's mouth dropped, "What?"
James eyes widen, "Do it again!" He demanded. Betta placed her hand back on the scanner. Again, the screen flashed green. Betta's eyebrows sqwished together, "This doesn't make sense! How is it that everyday I come here the screen is red, but now it's suddenly green?" "Jerry! When's the last maintenance check?" "This morning."
Betta stared at the screen intensely. "This is impossible. Right, James!"
Silence.
"James?" Betta looked up to find herself face to face with an assault rifle. Her jaw dropped, "James!" "Turn around and walk into the cage." He said, his voice and gun shaking. Betta was in disbelief, "You can't actually believe that this machine is working properly!" "Betta, I don't want to hurt you. Just walk into the cage and I won't." "James! You've been here every day I have! Please, you have to believe that the machine isn't working." "I said the in the cage!"
"What's going on out there!?"
"James!" Betta exclaimed, tears visible in the corners of her eyes. "Betta! Please!" "James!" Betta saw his finger go to the trigger of his gun. She closed her eyes and flinched.
Instead of being shot with a bullet, she found herself alive. Still standing. Betta opened her eyes to find herself fa e to face with a man. Betta jumped back. "The name's Delsin. I just saved you from those assholes."
Betta looked around to find the soldiers pinned to the ground with... smoke? "Y-You did t-this?" Betta asked nervously. Delsin nodded as if he was proud of it, "Come on dollface. I have some friends who can help you get those powers of yours activated."
