The mouth of the statue forced open. Harry and Seamus backed away until they were leaning against the wall. The giant serpent uncoiled itself from the statue's mouth. "Kill them." Harry heard Tom order in Parseltongue. The Basilisk moved towards them, slivering on the floor. They kept their eyes firmly shut and ran blindly through the chamber. Out of nowhere they heard a loud screech. They squinted their eyes open to see a crimson bird, the same size of a swan, swooping down and dropping the Sorting Hat at their feet before landing directly onto the Basilisk's eyes. Harry recognised the bird as Dumbledore's phoenix Fawkes. Fawkes dug it's beak into the snake's eyes and it's blood streamed to the floor and it was spitting in agony. "No! Smell them! Kill them!" Tom hissed to it. The blinded snake swayed, it was confused but still deadly. Seamus grabbed the hat quickly. "Help us please, help us." He begged quietly.

The hat had no replying voice but instead however the hat contracted. Something extremely heavy and hard landed onto the top of his hands. He pulled the hat off to reveal a gleaming silver sword with glistening rubies, the size of eggs, on the handle. Along the side was a marking that read 'Godric Gryffindor' "Harry, take this, I'll stay with Shannon and protect her." Seamus whispered before handing Harry the sword. "Kill them! Now! The boy is behind you!" Tom hissed again. The serpent's head fell, it's body coiled around, hitting the pillar as it turned to face him. Harry could see the huge, bloody orbs, see the mouth opening wide lined with fangs as long as his sword. The Basilisk lunged at him, Harry dodged and it hit the wall. It lunged once more and it's sharp tongue lashed Harry's side. Harry rose the sword in both of his hands. The Basilisk lunged again, Harry threw his whole weight behind the sword and drove it into the roof of the snake's mouth. As warm blood covered Harry's sleeves, he felt a splitting pain above his right elbow. One large, poisonous fang sank deeper and deeper into his arm and splintered as the serpent fell to the floor, twitching.

Harry collapsed down on the floor in pain next to Seamus and Shannon. He grasped the fang and yanked it out of his arm. It was too late. The venom had already spread through his body. His vision became blurry. Fawkes landed beside him. "You're dead Potter. That pathetic bird knows it too, he's crying look." Harry blinked. Everything was still blurred but he could just make out the tears dripping down Fawkes' feathers. "I'm going to watch you die Potter, the end of famous Harry Potter. You'll join your Mudblood mother soon." Tom laughed. Harry felt drowsy. Everything seemed to be spinning. However his pain seemed to be leaving him and his vision was slowly becoming clearer. Harry looked at his arm to see the wound had disappeared and tears were shining around it. "Phoenix tears.. healing powers... I forgot." Tom said quietly staring at Harry's arm astonished and disappointed. "That doesn't matter. I prefer it this way, fighting till death, you and me in front of your silly little friends." Harry sneakily passed Seamus the fang. Seamus looked at the diary and he had an idea,

Seamus seized the Basilisk fang and plunged it right in the heart of the diary. A long dreadful scream pierced in the air. Ink squirted out of the diary flooding over Seamus' hands, flooding the floor. Tom was twisting, screaming, breaking until... he had gone. The venom burnt a hole right through it. A faint moan escaped Shannon's lips as she began to stir.
