Frozen and numb

I was distraught, and confused.

All Saturday night and felt like I didn't get a wink of sleep. I had a long busy shift on Sunday at the bakery. My manager kept telling me to pick up the pace and told me my pipping skills were off. The day dragged on and when I got home at 7, I went straight to bed. I hoped that the next day at school I could talk to him.

On Monday I woke up feeling numb. I didn't have the energy to do any work in class or pay attention. I didn't see him until the end of the day. He didn't sit with me at lunch and skipped the class we had together.

On my way out of the school, I saw one of his old friends take his bag and dump everything on the ground while another pinned him to the wall. "You want our friendship back after what you did to Bianca? To us? Think again." One of them snarled. He looked like the new alpha of the popular crowd. "I never said I wanted your friendship Kevin, I just want my stuff back.." Ashton spat angrily. I tried to scare them off but they stayed put when they saw I was there. "Your little loser friend or girlfriend or whatever she is doesn't scare us anymore. She hasn't hurt a fly since her first day." One of Kevin's allies spat. "Why would you want to hang out with that freak, Ashton?" He said walking towards me, trying to look intimidating. I tried my hardest to stand my ground and not show fear or emotion. "Does the bitch even speak?" I froze completely and couldn't say anything. He tried to egg me on but my body and mouth wouldn't move. "Some friend she must be, eh Ashton, doesn't even have the audacity to stick up for you -" "Stop calling her my friend. I don't even know her!" Ashton snapped, barking in his face. A teacher came outside to get in his car and the other boys bolted away.

Once they left we both tried to collect ourselves. My face had fallen in late reaction. "Ash, I'm so sorry.." I told him as he picked up his things and put them in his bag. He looked right through me as though I was invisible. His face and body language showed that he was steaming with anger but I could see in his eyes the amount of pain he was feeling. He looked away shaking his head. Tears began to spring from my eyes as he stormed off.

I showed up at his house after dinner, taking a deep breath and knocking on the door. His sister came to the door and she invited me into the kitchen. We talked for a bit and then she went to go get Ashton from his room. She came back with a frown on her face. She said Ashton said to tell me he's 'busy'. She also said she tried to talk to him about it earlier but he wouldn't budge. Before I left she gave me a folded photo and said it was from him. I thanked her for her help and walked home with an empty and hopeless feeling.

I stormed up to my room and threw the photo on the floor. I crashed onto my bed and felt like I had cried myself dry. I heard a knock at my door. Annabelle came into my room to comfort me and asked if I wanted to build legos or watch frozen with her to make me feel better. She tried giving me advise about Ashton which I thought was cute, because she cared for and liked him. I felt thankful for having a sister like her and felt hopeful about what tomorrow would bring.
