Chapter By: Merry

Merry awoke in one of the square fenced off areas near the troll cave. He had definitely overslept big time he thought. Merry looked around and it was now dark again and the three trolls were boiling water over a huge fire. They were talking about what spices they would use on Merry and how to cook him. The trolls weren't paying any attention to Merry, so this was his chance to escape so Boromir and Gimli didn't have to risk getting seen.

Pippin: When Merry told me this part of his story, it was my favorite!

Merry: Mine too actually.

Merry got to his feet and identified the area around him. The fencing was just four stakes in the ground shaped with rope as a square. This was too easy, thought Merry. He could just crawl under the rope fencing unnoticed. He guessed the trolls weren't as smart as he thought they were earlier.

Merry watched the trolls as he walked in the shadows of the night toward the rope fencing. He only looked down once when he felt something under his foot. Only a stick and thank goodness he hadn't stepped on it and cracked it and made a loud noise.

Once at the rope fence, Merry ducked and crawled under the rope slowly. Stopping only once to make sure the trolls were still distracted about how to cook him. Even though it was dark, he could still see because of the almost full moon in the dark sky and the giant fire the trolls where sitting around. Although Merry didn't see Boromir or Gimli, he knew they were out there ready to get him back to them.

All of a sudden, Gimli appeared just above the troll cave on a tall boulder and yelled down to the trolls,

"Hello! Do ya mind if I join ye? I'm quite hungry for some meat,"

This was definitely a distraction which told Merry to go now. He crawled under the rope and then as he stood, somebody grabbed him from behind. One hand over his mouth and the other arm lifting him off the ground. Merry tried shouting but nothing came out. He was set down behind a tree and Merry saw that it was Boromir. Merry had a sigh of relief. Boromir put his finger to his lips meaning "Shhh".

The trolls were looking very wide eyed at Gimli standing above their cave on the boulder.

"Get it," the large troll whispered to the other trolls and they all started going for Gimli.

Then Gimli jumped off the boulder and yelled,

"Never mind, I got what I wanted!"

The white eyed troll whirled around to the fences and gasped,

"Hobbit gone! Search!"

The trolls shouted loudly, growled, and made huge roaring sounds as they tipped back their heads. Merry and Boromir started running away from the troll cave. Boromir pulled on Merry's arm and they ran fast. Merry tried not to step on thorns or sharp rocks.

Merry: In my opinion, Frodo, Boromir was going too fast. I almost fell once.

They stopped behind a big bush and caught their breaths.

"Gimli knows to meet us here, don't worry. It was all part of the plan," Boromir said calmly.

Merry nodded and said,

"Thank you,"

"Nothing a soldier of Gondor can't do!" Boromir said with a bright smile, "You hungry?"

"Very," Merry said. The last time he had eaten was before the battle of orcs and before Frodo and Sam decided to leave.

"Well, I don't have much. The old elf is hogging all the elf bread," Boromir said and handed Merry a pack of the carefully wrapped Lembas bread.

Merry ripped it open and ate all its contents happily. Then he licked his fingers clean.

"Do you think Gimli's okay?" Merry asked and put the wrapper from the bread in his pocket.

"Positive, the plan was to make sure the trolls didn't follow him back to us," Boromir explained.

Merry: I personally think Gimli would be too loud and slow to lead the trolls astray, but whatever, it's over now I guess.

Moments later, Gimli came running into view. He was panting like crazy.

"Finally, let's go find that river now," Boromir said.

Gimli grumbled to himself while walking behind Merry and Boromir to the river.
