Merry and Pippin were in Mr. Maggot's garden trying to find carrots and potatoes. (A/N: I know what you are thinking... Po-Tah-Toes- Sam ;-). They were keeping low in the tall grass and wheat, while trying to keep quiet. Up until Merry accidentally stepped on a stick and cracked it.

"Shhh!" whispered Pippin putting his finger to his lips.

Merry gave I'm an irritated look and then kept going. They were going through the corn stalks now and didn't have to worry about staying low. The stalks grew lots taller than the Hobbits.

"The carrots should be around the next corner," Merry whispered and pointed to the next corn stalk corner.

"Right," Pippin whispered back.

They turned the corner and there was nothing but a large field of brown dirt with green sprouts poking out of the ground.

"Carrots!" Pippin said quietly, but excitingly.

"Okay. Quick, quiet, low," Merry said.

Merry and Pippin each where carrying a brown bag that slung across their backs. They took them off their backs and started plucking carrots out of the ground one by one. Soon their bags were about half full and it was onto find the potatoes.

Walking back through the corn field, they were extra quiet as they got closer to the Maggots house. Mr. Maggot knew the hobbit thieves loved the potatoes, so he always grew them right by his front door. They could see the house now through the corn and made their way to the front yard area. Now was the time they had to come out of the corn field protection and into the open.

"Ready?" Merry asked.

Pippin nodded.

"Quick, quiet, and..."

"Low," Pippin finished.

They tried going for the potatoes that were farthest from the front door. Mr. Maggot had a huge yellow front door that could open at any moment. Merry and Pippin kept throwing the door uneasy glances as they dug the potatoes out of the ground. Soon their bags were almost full and they were picking the last couple potatoes that could fit in the bags.

There were still hundreds of them left in the yard, so Merry and Pippin never felt bad about taking Maggots vegetables. After all it was just sharing and he had the biggest garden in all the Shire. Suddenly the big yellow door creaked open and out stepped Mr. Maggot himself. Merry and Pippin froze under his glare. He was holding a tall shovel in one hand and a rake in the other.

It wasn't until Mr. Maggot stepped forward and got closer to the Hobbits until they got up from the ground. He looked a lot older then the last time they had seen him, but young enough to give a chase. Luckily, nobody had ever caught up to Merry and Pippin. They were too fast for the older Hobbits.

"Leave the bag," Merry whispered into Pippin's ear.

Pippin set down his bag slowly, but kept the potatoes that were in his arms. Merry did the same and then directed his voice to Mr. Maggot,

"Did you miss us?"

Mr. Maggot had stepped off his porch and was now only a few feet in front of the Hobbits when he yelled,

"Thieves! Get them!"

Then three other men came out from Mr. Maggot's front door, all holding some type of gardening tool.

"I guess that's a no," Merry said to everyone.

Then Merry and Pippin took off running through the corn again. They could hear the other men following them as they shouted angry words. They last time Merry and Pippin had been chased in Mr. Maggots yard was when they had run into Frodo and Sam and started there adventure as the Fellowship and journeyed across Middle Earth. That had been nearly 4 years ago and now they were back to take from Mr. Maggots garden.

As they ran, they grabbed more vegetables on the way. Corn, cabbage, and some radish. Then they finally had run across the whole yard and came across the fence. Merry and Pippin started stuffing all the vegetables they had inside their pockets and jackets. As they got to the fence, they jumped it and landed clean on the other side.

From there, they walked appearing to be normal Hobbits walking in the Shire. As they walked to their house, they looked over their shoulders every now and then to make sure they weren't being followed. The chasers had lost them which was what always happened. Finally they got to their house soon after and Pippin pulled open the blue door. They walked in and locked it behind them.

Merry and Pippin went to the kitchen right away and started getting buckets of water to wash off all the dirt off of the carrots, potatoes, and radishes they had carried. Pippin sat at the table and started scrubbing the dirt off some carrots. Merry opened the window by the table and gasped.

"What?" Pippin asked looking up from the food.

Merry pointed out the window at some apple trees. Pippin got up and looked to where Merry was pointing and gasped too.

"We forgot to make the apple pie!... or pies!" they both shouted at the same time.

Merry grabbed some baskets and they both ran out the door... again...

The End
