Sarah's Delight, the restaurant I worked at which Hailey swears is nothing but a diner, wasn't so far from where I lived but I had to take a cab though. I couldn't walk right now, not with the way I was feeling. Getting a car right now meant getting traced in other words, it meant getting caught and I wasn't ready to die yet. The huge signboard with the words, 'Sarah's Delight' written on it, decorated with beautiful lights came to view as the cab approached the restaurant.
I paid the driver, gave a nod to the security guard which they returned and walked into the restaurant. As expected, it was busy as usual for Saturday. As much as Hailey hated the place, it was pretty okay. The walls were painted yellow with a touch of brown. Hailey taught the colour was nauseating, I felt it was cool because in my opinion, yellow is a pretty cool colour. I could still remember the look on Hailey's face when I said that, taught me to keep my opinions on the restaurant to myself. Putting the colour of the walls aside, it has a pretty good view, especially to those by the window. Instead of a plain concrete wall, the part of the building that faced the road was made completely of glass.
Again, the look on Hailey's face when I said that the restaurant gave a good view of the road was once again priceless. I remember her asking the kind of weed I take, she couldn't understand how I found looking at the road relaxing. I remember using hours to explain to her that people are different and some may love it and that it was better than a wall but she still thinks I'm crazy for thinking that. I looked down at my wrist watch, it was ten minutes to six o'clock. I was on time and at least safe from the long lecture I was bound to receive from our manager if I was late. Becky could be intense sometimes.
Walking into Sarah's Delight on a Saturday was always the same. The same tired look on the waitresses and waiters, the same impatient and pissed off look on the customers. Too many people to attend to all at once and very little people to attend to them. We've requested over and over for the restaurant to employ more people but they never did.
The first person I set my eyes on was Hailey, she was smiling and cheerfully serving a couple and three kids that I assumed to be their kids despite her tired eyes and the sweat that was breaking out on her forehead. But immediately she laid eyes on me, her smile left her face. She ended her conversation with the couple and walked towards the back door that's leads to the back room.
I was really stupid.
I tell you that every time.
And I tell you to shut up every time.
She was hurt, I knew it, I was the cause of it and I had to fix this. I quickly followed her and found her sitting on a chair, she patted the seat next to her for me to sit.
"I-"
"How are you doing now? Do you feel better?" She said cutting me off before I could even begin.
"I'm fine, I guess I'm doing better now. Look Hailey-"
"Does your head hurt, do you need anything?." She said looking me dead in the eyes. Her eyes held no emotion whatsoever and she was being awfully nice. Is this the part where I get scared?.
Yes, you should.
"My head hurts a bit but I'll be alright-"
"I think I have a pill somewhere in the locker room. I'll go get it." She said as she stood up to leave, I quickly grabbed her by the arm.
"Sit Hailey, please." She rolled her eyes as she takes her sit. "I'm really sorry Hailey, for what I said. Comparing you to Elisa, I knew I wasn't feeling well but it was so stupid of me to say something like that to you. Yes, Elisa has been my best friend since we were children and we've been through a lot of shit together but still, you're you. The only friend I have right now and I'm so sorry for saying what I said."
