"What did you just say?!" Becky screamed at me in a challenging tone while moving closer to me, like a predator to its prey as if scare me. Her face held a scowl. If I was just a random girl, I'll be intimidated by her size but I wasn't. I'm Reina.
"You heard me quite well, if you lay your hands on him again, this won't end well." I said calmly, moving equally closer to her while holding Arturo behind me.
"Oh, so what is this? You sent your little Mexican thief to steal from us?. Even though we pay you well you're still an ingrate, just like the rest of your people. You know how much I put at risk letting you work here." Her eyes scanned both of us quickly.
Whoever gave people the idea that Mexicans were thieves must be very stupid. The person should be hanged and then cut to pieces.
"First and foremost Becky," I started off calmly, pointing my finger to her face. "He isn't a thief. Don't you ever call him that again-"
"Don't you dare-" she said trying to cut me off.
"I'm not done Becky, let me finish. Secondly, I didn't send him here. He's probably just hungry that's why he ended up here. Don't make a scene out of it. And most importantly, Mexicans aren't 'ingrates'. We are hardworking people, and we are proud of where we come from. Don't refer to us as such again." I said not minding the fact that I could lose my job if she so wishes in an instant. I had no idea why she kept me around anyways. When I came around looking for a job, she spotted immediately that my work permit was fake, I don't know how she figured it out but she did. She's the first. But somehow she gave me the job.
"Sí viva México!" Arturo exclaimed, punching his fist in the air with a huge grin on his face.
"What did the kid say?." Becky asked suspiciously with a brow raised.
I really need to learn how to do that.
"Nothing you should worry about." I told her covering it up with a laugh which thank God I was good at, before turning to face Arturo. "Keep quiet will you?. I'm trying to save you here." I whispered to him, he responded with a remorseful look and a nod of his head in understanding, I turned to face Becky.
She looked at me, then at Arturo then me again, then at Arturo. Repeating this about five times. Then she let out a heavy breath.
"If y'all know each other, I'm supposed to just believe he ended up in here by coincidence? And that you didn't send him to steal from the restaurant?." She was calm now and she took a step back.
"Are you kidding me Becks? I've been working here for almost two years, you and everyone else have been really good to me. Why would I send him to steal food?. Seriously, think about it. Why send him to steal food when I can get him food instead. I'm not stupid, you of all people should know that. I would never do you like this."
She gave me a skeptical look but I was sure she was super close to letting this go. "You never told me you had any family here in LA. Who's the kid?"
"He's a friend, we just met a while back and-"
"A while back? Be specific." She said taking another step away from me, interrupting me yet again and placing her hands on her waist while waiting for me to respond.
"I met him two nights ago and-"
"What?! You met him two nights ago and you think you know him already?. He's a thief and he's gonna face the law!" She said moving to get a hold of Arturo. But I held him close while taking a defensive stance.
"He's a child, he could never hurt anybody." I don't know why I was so sure about this, I really didn't know the kid well enough but that didn't stop me. "No Becky please. Do not take him to the cops. Can we act like this never happened, and I'll make sure he never steals from the restaurant again."
