Look into my eyes and I can see right through you...
"Riley turn that crap off, guests are here"! I only hear the last few words of the sentence Elena yelled to me.
I was drowning the outside world out, with my loud guitar. I had just turned plugged it into the big amps, and was playing one of the familiar tunes my dad taught me. Some of the strums were soft, and some were fast and strong. But still peaceful to me, and sometimes Elena.
When we first lost our parents I would play the same song over and over until Elena fell asleep. I had a big soft spot for Elena when she was sad. Every once in a while she would come up into my room and lay on my bed while I strummed a few cords, and created my own little lullaby. I'm the older twin which means that I'm supposed to comfort her when she's sad, or stop her when she does something stupid. That had all changed when her boyfriend Stefan came into her life. He was now there for her when she was feeling emotional. Of course, I get jealous every once in a while, but I have a reason to.
Elena and Jeremy now take care of their problems ,and I'm just sitting there puzzled on how I unfold my problems. Truth is, I'm alone in this war between depression, and any other side effects of the problems that have yet to be solved. Elena only talks to me if I need to go to school, or to correct me if I'm doing something I'm not supposed to be doing. She was now probably the mom of the house.
I like to think back to the time where I had to hold them until they fell asleep, or when I had to remind them to do things. I love the feeling of taking care of people who are down, the only downside of that is when they start crying and you have to be the strong one and hold back all your problems and tears.
I've always wanted to be emotionless, so I wouldn't have to think about the ups,and downs in my life and just focus on doing something that would actually not effect on any of my family crisis, or wouldn't cause me to get mad every day. But then reality comes back and I have to get up and face the world again.
I had noticed that I was sitting in the same position; with my electric guitar, and my feet curled up in front of me. The talking coming from downstairs made me stand up, and hang my guitar back on my wall with all my posters, and open my door to peek downstairs.
All I saw was the back of two heads, they both appeared to be boys. One of them had black hair, and the other had dirty blonde. I knew they guy with dirty blonde hair was Stefan, because he was hugging what looked like Elena. The other anonymous man was just standing there awkwardly, looking around. I had a weird feeling I've seen him before, and it wasn't that long ago.
I tried to sneak over closer to the railing that met the staircase, so I could get a better look. I'm not really fond of strangers in my house. Right, when I decided to stop ninja walking my footstep in the wrong spot. When I put my right foot down on the soft carpet, the floor creaked. It wasn't even that loud but it still made all three of them turn around and look up.
"Crap". I mumbled to myself. Why did I have to sneak up on them, curiosity killed the cat.
I noticed those same icy blue eyes that I encountered at The Grill. Damon Salvatore, the one I was banned from seeing.
Damon's eyes were still on me while Stefan was talking to Elena as if I wasn't even here.
My stomach growled, which caused an awkward silence. I skipped down the stairs and went to the kitchen to get something to eat.
I heard them follow me to the kitchen, Oh god, what did I do now.
I turned around to find them all whispering, and the only word I caught was my name. I tried to ignore them and fixed myself a Pb and j sandwich. They were still standing in the doorway of the kitchen chatting up a storm.
"I love secrets", I indicate. I licked the remaining peanut butter off the butter knife.
Finally, Elena and Stefan walked to where I was standing. Yet Damon was still standing there looking like a lost puppy, and from what I've heard he never keeps his mouth shut.
Stefan placed his hand in front of me, but I just stared at Elena. Her eyes were dull, and looked deep in thought, what is with her these days?
Should I play nice, he is Elena's boyfriend, but her past with boyfriend wasn't very good. The way they looked at each other, though, that was a once in a lifetime look that you only get from someone who cares about you. I decided to be a good sister.
"Welcome to the family." My voice was quite chary, and Elena looked relieved.
I pulled Stefan into a tight embrace and made sure to speak quietly.
"Hurt her, I will hunt you down, and I'll cut something you'll miss off, with an ax". My voice sounded sinister, but once I let go of him, I went back to my wide smile.
Stefan's face was a bit pale than usual.
I heard a loud laugh from the corner of the room. I had now forgotten about Damon standing in the corner. I don't know what he was laughing at, I hope he didn't hear what I said to Stefan.
"Y'no I like her, she's more interesting than you Elena". I rose an eyebrow, was I suppose to take that as a compliment.
"Damon stay away from Riley." Elena glared at Damon than at me. "And I don't want you to talk to him Riley, he's dangerous."
What did she mean by dangerous; a murder? I just shrugged and ate my sandwich that I had just made.
"Riley go upstairs". Elena commanded. I just looked her like she was crazy. Was she really about to embarrass me in the middle of them, now that's not cool? I swallowed my sandwich and walked closer to her so that we were two feet away from each other.
But this didn't scare Elena, it just confused her.
"Riley do this, Riley do that, how about you stop acting like a mom, your not mom!" My finger was on her chest, I needed her to know that she can't control me like some kind of robot. I had never gotten this made, only after the 'accident'.
Stefan came into my view and was probably waiting for the right moment to break up if this got too bad.
Elena, of course, looked offended. I could see the tear in the corner of her eyes.
"I have to keep you safe, you know that after-". She took a deep breath and then continued. "-After the crash you were different, things are different now, there is no one to take care of us anymore. And someone had to become in charge or the whole house with fall down." She was now whispering while silent tears slid down her cheek.
I only scoffed,"Say it Elena, say it, Mom's gone, Dad's gone everyone is gone. We only have each other, because THERE DEAD." I exhaled and walked out the kitchen and towards the stairs. "Wake up, Elena, were in reality. I was there for you when mom and dad died. I sang you to sleep when you had a nightmare. If you expect me to treat you like my sister than you better know your place."
I walked upstairs, stomping my way to the bathroom. I made sure to close the door behind me.
I just stared at the girl in front of me, she had blonde hair and she was wearing a long dress that was all dirty, and little splatters of blood on the hem.
"There coming".
