Chapter eighteen

The bouquet

I kept taking the red stones to keep the baby inside me healthy and alive. Envy told me everything I needed to know about what was going on and gave me a handful of them to take daily. I sat on the bed in room 33 thinking and sorting things out with myself.

"Beauty's thoughts"

Inside me is growing a baby, but something not human. Envy told me it will look exactly like a human and have all human traits but one: The hundred thousands of human souls inside it. I need to keep eating those red stones or else it will take away my soul while growing and kill me. Once I'm dead, the baby will die as well since it has nothing to feed from anymore, and when I say feeding I mean souls.

So far the baby is still a secret, but eventually my belly will start growing and the people will notice that I'm pregnant. I need a good explanation for it, a good act. I also need a father for my baby, and since Envy refuses to stay with me and live as a normal family; thinking that it's only humans who do so, I need to build a family for my little one.

"End of thoughts"

Suddenly there was a knock at the door and in came Ling.

THAT'S IT!

"My queen... I mean Beauty." He said stumbling on his words

"Yes Ling?"

"I was... hoping you would agree on coming with me to... umm... well it's a surprise."

"As long as nothing wrong happens I will come."

He smiled and told me to go down when I was done fixing myself.

We were on a familiar road. It felt like ages since I last seen this place. The smell of the fresh picked morning flowers from misses Dooley's flower shop, the delicious vegetables and fruits with fancy colors at mister Hansel's grocery store, the sound of little children going to mister Enron's toy shop. I was home.

Ling opened the door for me; the smell of the apple pies still filled the air. I went into the kitchen and the living room to examine what happened to my house but all I saw was dust building up on all surfaces.

The house was quite and empty, and that was the only thing that didn't change, but the silence was crushed by a sad sobbing noise. I couldn't hold in my tears and began to cry. How did this happen? It seemed like only yesterday I was living an ordinary life and now I'm in the middle of a war between homunculi and humans with a philosopher stone growing like a human in me.

"Beauty, why are you crying?" Ling asked me

I didn't answer and just kept crying.

Ling pulled me closer to his chest slowly where I began to sob louder bit by bit. He caressed my hair and tried to calm me down.

"It's no use." I said to him with sad tears filling my eyes. "I remember only one soul on this earth that can force out a smile from me."

Ling drew a wide smile on his face and said:

"Yeah... about that... I actually have a surprise for you."

I looked at him wondering what he prepared for me: he whistled and suddenly I heard steps from upstairs.

"MISHKA!" I screamed happily when I saw her. "I can't believe it's you, I thought I lost you forever." I said while crying happily and hugging Mishka who was licking my face also happy to see me.

"We took care of her when you were kidnapped by the enemy." Ling said

"Thank you so much, this is one of the happiest moments of my life."

Mishka began sniffing me and kept licking my belly. She must have sensed the baby.  I was trying to push her away so that Ling wouldn't know that I was pregnant.

"Does she usually do that?" Ling asked

"Yeah it's kind of a habit."

"I see, how about we go out and play with her a bit? I bet she misses you a lot."

I smiled and went out to the back yard with him and Mishka. Laughter and joy filled my spirit for being with my Mishka; the true one that can force a smile on my face and make me happy.

"Here, wear this." Ling said to me after going to the house, he handed me a beautiful red dress. "I will be waiting outside for you when you finish."

"Alright, I won't take long."

I got into the red dress that fitted me perfectly; fixed my hair and accessorized. I looked into the mirror and observed myself in it. I smiled for looking so beautiful, but my smile slowly faded when I looked at my belly and touched it. I caressed it, the life inside me that was growing slowly, the fruit of Envy and me, my baby. I wanted it to feel the motherly love I forgot to give it since day one. I smiled at it and cried a few tears of joy.

I went outside the house and had Ling escort me to the place he wanted to take me to. We arrived to a vast green field with many colorful flowers. There was a table made of glass and diamonds in the middle of the field; on it was displayed a large flower bouquet of white roses. I looked at Ling wondering what this was all about; he smiled and told me to take a look. I approached the table and saw the roses; they smelled so good and were so beautiful. I noticed something inside the bouquet, a small black box. I took it and looked at Ling who was standing next to me.

"It's nothing much I know" he said while taking the box from me "But I wanted to keep this as simple as possible; no royal and fancy things." He said while getting on one knee "I am trying so hard to be a normal person and this might be a fast question but..." he opened the box and revealed what was hidden in it.

I was shocked and didn't know what to say or what to do.

"Beauty..." he said with a shine in his eyes reflecting the moon light. "Will you marry me?"
