I browsed the aisles at Barnes and Noble, looking something to brush up my studies on. I found a book on psychology I hadn't read yet, so I picked that up and dropped it in my bag of books.

I crouched down in the aisle and looked at the subjects I had already, listing them aloud. "Psychology, biology, quantum mechanics, astrophysics, and... anatomy! I'm set for this summer." I sighed to myself and went to buy them.

I walked out of the store and started to make my way home, carrying the bag of six heavy books in my arms rather than by the handles. I took a back way that was a sort of shortcut, and kept alert just for in case.

I wouldn't have ever guessed the trouble came when I was out on the street.

"Hey, Dori!" Someone called and I turned and saw a guy I hated but what somewhat friends with, Garrett. He was with his friends Ryan and Sean. Basic fuckboys.

"Hi." I said, slightly unsure of approaching them. Garrett came over and flicked his cigarette to the ground and crushed it with his foot.

"Whatcha got there?" He asked and I shifted my weight a little, adjusting the bag.

"Oh, just some books. Nothing special." I shrugged and his hand dug in and pulled out the quantum mechanics books and began flipping through it.

"You understand this shit? Well, of course you do. You always were the smartest girl in class." He smirked up at me, holding my book under his arm as he took out another cigarette and lit it, puffing smoke everywhere.

He flipped it back open and Ryan and Sean came over and peered over his shoulder. "What's this nerd shit?" Sean asked, laughing slightly.

"Can I have my book back, please? I've got to get home." I said, reaching for it, but Ryan took it from Garrett and backed up a few paces.

"No, not yet. I'm not done reading. What's this mean? And this?" He asked, holding it up and pointing to random spots on the page.

"C'mon man, she's gotta get home. Give her the book back. Hey, Dori, need help carrying these?" Garrett said and reached for my bag, which I clutched to my chest.

"No, I've got it. I just would like my book ba-" I was cut off by Ryan and Sean laughing and tapping their cigarette ash right on the pages, making them burn and catch fire. "Hey!" I frowned and Garrett held me back.

Then something fell from the rooftops and knocked Ryan and Sean right the fuck out. I was torn from Garrett and he was thrown back against the wall and I saw a bruise forming on his jaw.

I turned to see my rescuer stomping on the book to put the fire out. I frowned, kinda sad, kinda pissed.

"Sorry about them. They're dicks, aren't they?" The guy said and I just nodded, trying my best not to cry. I stared at the ground and my feet.

"Um, thanks for beating them up for me..." I said and turned to walk home, and I wiped a tear from under my eye.

"Hey..." the dudes voice said and he put a hand on my shoulder and turned me to face him. The first thing I noticed was that his hand was huge and he only had three fingers.

I found myself stretching my neck up to look at him, and he was not human. He adjusted the glasses that sat on his nose and gave me a smile.

"Are you an alien?" Was the first thing out of my mouth.

He laughed a little and shook his head. "Technically I'm a turtle. A mutant humanoid turtle. I'm also a ninja. I know it's hard to believe, but here I am." He said and held his arms out, and I giggled a little.

"Hey, listen, I feel bad for what those guys did, so I'm going to get you a new book, okay? What was it on?" He asked, taking out a phone thing to take notes.

"Oh, um... quantum mechanics." I said and he stared up at me in shock.

"What is a pretty girl like you doing with a book like that?" He asked and I smiled a bit.

"What? I can't be pretty and smart? Only one or the other?" I teased and he perked up.

"No! Of course not! Of course you can be smart and attractive! I mean, not that I find you attractive, or not that you aren't attractive, I just- is it hot?" He babbled and I giggled a bit more.

"My name's Dorian." I said and held my hand out, balancing the books on my hip.

"Donatello." He stuttered out and shook my hand.

"Like the Renaissance artist?" I asked.

"Named after him." He nodded and I smiled.

"Nice to meet you, Donatello." I took his phone thing and typed in my address in his notes. "This is where I live. I expect that book in no more than a week." I said and he beamed.

"Y-yes ma'am." He saluted me and I giggled and turned to go home.

Hot damn.
