JADE
Andre returned to school. His one month home had concluded. This was the last week of detention for me and the start of his.
Makena was free.
Andre never looked at Makena or I. He acted as if we didn't exist. I liked that. He didn't exist either and we all continued to live our lives like normal, distancing ourselves.
Andre and Asia were done. Asia ceased talking to him and he was moved to a different seat across the class.
I was now able to meet with the track team. The incarceration was over. I was thrilled.
The Balmoral High versus Hollace High athletics tournament was around the corner. The selected winner would advance to the state's tournament and battle fifteen other schools to reach number one. I was excited.
I was out on the track, alone, running a two hundred. Our meet was over, but I didn't want to leave. I took an extra half hour to train.
I halted at the view of Asia as she walked over to me. "You're still here?" I asked with furrowed brows.
"I have nothing to do at home later, so I decided to wait." Asia answered. "You were taking a while so I came over."
"Aw." I said. "You missed me, mamas?" Asia smiled and rolled her orbs. "Yes."
"You could've cut the small talk." I said. "All I needed to hear was that I'm missed."
"Girl." Asia uttered. "You need to watch that mouth." I smiled at her. "You know what I mean."
"Mm." Asia sounded, she wanted to embrace, but I moved back. I was in the sun, running around, for over an hour.
"I'm all hot, babe." I said. I was covered in sweat. "That's cool." Asia said, moving closer to me. "I still want to be held."
Asia loved, loved, loved affection. It was admirable, cute even. I liked charming her.
"Ok." I said. "But, don't be mad at how horrid I feel." Asia leaned in and embraced me. I made sure to rub a little sweat on her, she screamed. "Bae!" Asia cleaned her face, revolted. "You didn't have to do all that."
"You wanted it." I said. "You're irksome." I beamed. "I'll be done in a few minutes." I said. "I need to be set for the tournament."
"You will be." Asia told me. "You'll do terrific."
"Thanks." The bulb switched on. "How 'bout we race?"
"Um." Asia sounded. "It'll be fun, come on." I added. Asia exhaled. I assumed that was an ok. I stood beside her. "We'll run from here to there, ok?" Asia nodded.
"One, two, three!" I shouted.
Asia and I dashed. I led the race, but drew back a bit to make her think she was faster. I let her win the race.
"You should be hot wheels instead." I teased. "You let me win." Asia said, breathing hard. "You think I wouldn't notice? I know I'm not fast."
"You're still remarkable." I told her, kissing her on the forehead. "A star."
Asia smiled and waited beneath a tree until I was done. I walked her home, kissed her farewell, and left to take a cold shower. I needed to build resilience.
Two weeks later, the athletics tournament was here. I smoked Josiah in our races last week and it felt fulfilling. The team was anxious and enthusiastic about the event, but I knew we had this shit. Asia kissed me and wished me luck.
Our marching band led us onto the field. Makena was in the outside row, hitting the drums. Desirae fawned over and loved how attractive she looked in uniform. It suited her.
Coach Benson shared motivational words and wished us all the best, all the luck/"".
I came first in the 200m, second in the 400m, and first in the 80m. Desirae came third in all of her races. Josiah, second. We won the 4x100 and advanced to the state tournament.
There was nothing but more and more work from here on out. And three weeks later, the state tournament was here.
Our arrival was fortunate, but our leave was not. The team lost and came in sixth. It hurt, but that's what life includes, failures and losses, and the fact we even made it this far said a'lot.
Coach Benson took us to Dave & Buster's to make us feel better. It worked, but I still remembered. I'll come back better at USC.
