Chapter Ten

{CONTINUATION OF CHAP. NINE}

Desirae, Makena, and I took the bus and went to school. Makena and I strolled into class and sat.

Andre and Asia walked in. Makena stared him down and clenched her teeth. Asia and I looked at each other. Her view averted.

At lunch, the three of us sat on the bench and I texted Asia. "I want to talk."

The text was read... and left unanswered. I felt like this was karma for what I did.

I looked to Makena. "It isn't working, she left me on read."

Makena exhaled. "Ok, come on, Des." Makena looked at Desirae. "You know what it is."

Desirae nodded and followed Makena into the school. Makena sent a text as she walked.

MAKENA

I strolled into the canteen alone. I walked to the food counter and observed what was there. It was all for show.

I've never eaten food from here. It looked ok, but I wasn't risking it. I ate contaminated food once and didn't know. The torment I felt was awful.

I looked over at a chick named Eden, who was involved in the scheme, and nodded once.

Eden strutted to Andre's table. He was cackling and smiling with his friends. It's clear he had no shame or contrition. I never liked his ass.

Eden stood behind him and smiled. "Hi, Andre." Asia who was beside him, picking at her food, looked back at Eden.

"Yeah?" Andre asked. "There's a female out in the hall, said she wants to talk." Eden said.

"And I'm the one she wants?"

"Yeah."

Andre scoffed and looked to his friends. "I'll be back, fellas."

Asia didn't even care. Her mouth was on mute, still harassing that damn food.

Andre walked out the canteen. I slid ten dollars into Mia's hand and went to the table.

JADE

I received a text from Desirae. "I'm with him." I hurried off the bench and went to our classroom.

On the route over, I saw Desirae and Andre chatting. His back was towards me, so I wasn't seen.

Desirae was cheesing so hard, I knew she was uncomfortable as hell, she hated men.

MAKENA

I crouched beside Asia. "Ja-"

"Yo, incorrect table, man." Ramon, Andre's best friend, told me. Asia looked at him. "A table's a fucking table."

Ramon smiled. He wanted to backtalk, but chose not to. He shook his head. Asia looked to me. "You can continue."

Damn, no wonder Jae likes her.

"Jae's in our class. You should talk to her." I said. "I don't need to." Asia averted. "Her choice has been made."

"There's an insane reason for all this." I said. "You have to listen to her to find out."

"You can't tell me?" Asia asked. "It's best to hear it from her." Asia rolled her orbs. "Fine... because I want to know."

"You sure there ain't another reason?" I asked. "I'm leaving." Asia said, refusing to answer. I smiled and teased her. "You two would look cute."

Asia started walking and mumbled beneath her breath. "You don't have to tell me what I know."

JADE

I leaned on the window. The door moved inward and in came Asia.

I watched her walk over and sit next to me. Her lower limbs falling between mine. Asia stared me down with an irritated look. Her face looked cute.

"Yes?" I asked. "You're a weirdo." Asia stated a second time. "You don't have to diss me."

"Yes, I do." Asia stated, maddened. "Makena said there was a reason, what is it?"

"Your friend." I answered. "The one in our class."

"Andre?"

"Yes."

I elaborated.

"Wait a damn minute." Asia uttered. The trick started cackling. "No... hell no."

"And I'm the weird one?"

"He said all that?" Asia asked, astounded. I bobbed. "Oh... this is too much." Asia said. "I'm starting to feel hot." Asia fanned herself.

I unlocked the window. The air blew on her.

"I knew he was bad, but I didn't know he was that kind of bad... he resorted to violence."

"He's a walking virus." I said. Asia shook her head. "How will I come into this?" I elucidated how. Asia exhaled. "...can we walk home later?"

"You know damn well we can't."

"But, still..." Asia mumbled. I was flustered. "You want us to walk home real bad, damn."

"And? I like our walk and talks."

"Well, it's texting for now."

"You better not leave me unanswered." Asia said. "I won't, mamas." I said. "You promise?"

"Yes."

"I have to hear it or it won't count." Asia said. "You-" I succumbed. "I promise, mamas." Asia smiled like a kid, she was so cute.
