ASIA
JADE
The semester was off to a cool start. It's been one week since we've returned and the workload was still overwhelming.
In class, I viewed Andre and Asia conversing. I still haven't made contact with her. I feel bashful when I think about it and that isn't like me. I don't know if it's because Andre's all over her, but shit, this ain't it.
Makena noticed I was looking. Her brows furrowed. "You cool, bruh?"
"Yeah." I answered. "You sure?" Makena asked. "You're either admiring her... or him."
"Huh?" I turned to Makena, confused. "I'm admiring neither."
Makena's face fell flat. "I'm not dumb, Jae. You've been watching her for the entire week. Just talk to her, damn."
"He's cock-blocking." I said. "Man, fuck him. I'll knock his ass out." Makena flared.
I smiled in bewilderment. "You don't have to do all that, Mak." I said. "But, thanks."
Makena backed down.
It was lunchtime. Makena left before me to meet with Desirae and reserve a bench. The nuisances loved confiscating the best ones.
I dotted down the last set of notes and slammed the book shut. I hadn't finished in time. I headed to the door and noticed a silver, thin bracelet twinkling at me from the floor. It looked extortionate.
I retrieved the bracelet and continued walking. I'll hold it until lunch is over, it must be one of the student's.
The moment I made it out the door, I butt heads with someone. The both of us crashed to the floor.
"Fuck." I uttered, wincing. That shit hurt.
I looked to the individual and clocked that it was Asia. Oh, shit. I hurried to her aid and raised her to her feet.
"You ok?" I asked. "That was an accident."
Asia held onto me. "I'm fine. You aren't the one at fault. I was walking too fast."
"I think we both were." I said, examining her head. There were no inflictions. Asia looked at me. Her orbs broadened. "Oh, no." Her voice was masked with concern.
I stared at her, clueless.
"Your nose is bleeding." Asia noted. I touched my nostril and saw blood. Her and I crashed a little too hard.
Asia took me to a chair and sat me down. "Don't move." I did as she said and sat still.
Asia left the room and returned with tissues, assisting me. I stared her down the entire time, astonished.
"What?" Asia asked. "You're nice as hell." I said. "You'd rather I leave it alone?"
"No." I differed. "It's cool."
Asia shoved some tissue in and stood back.
"Thanks." I said.
"You're welcome." Asia walked to her desk and scoured within. I observed her.
"You looking for this?" I asked, waving the bracelet in the air. Asia was elated. "Yes, that's it." I walked to her. "Here." Asia took the bracelet and scuffled to hook it.
"You want me to-?"
"Yes." Asia held her wrist out. "That's a cute bracelet." I said, hooking it for her. "The woman who left it for me died last month. It's a memento." Asia said.
"Damn, that's sad to hear." I said. "It seems I have a memento now, too." I aimed at my nose. Asia shook her head with a smile.
"I'm Jade. You can call me Jae." I said, holding a hand out. Asia shook it. "You're a life saver, Jae." Asia said. "Thanks so much."
"For sure." I said. "Just don't lose it a second time, who knows how kind the next student will be."
"I'll be more careful."
"Good." I said.
Asia walked out. Man, the closer she is, the finer her face. I need to leave before I miss lunch.
ASIA
The clock hit three and school was over. Andre walked me into the hall.
"Oh, shit." He uttered in recall. "I have basketball. You'll have to take the bus home." He said.
"You're serious?" I asked. "Yeah, I remembered we start back this evening." He answered.
Andre and I were friends, he was the first classmate to talk to me. But to others, we were more than that since he's been taking me home. I knew he wanted sex etcetera, but hearing the amount of females he's dealt with... it was a no for me.
"Good luck." I said. "Yeah, I'm out." He said, heading to the locker room.
I exhaled and walked outside. I went to the bus shed and stood in line with the one million other students.
"You're taking the bus?" A familiar voice asked. I looked behind me. Jae was there.
"Yes." I answered. "Your chauffeur's on break?" Jae asked, looking around. I was shocked and tried hard not to smile. "Don't call him that."
"Ain't that what he is?"
"No." I halted. "You're troublesome." Jae smiled. "No, I'm not."
"Your smile states otherwise." I said. "Your words are causing me to smile."
"Then I'll stop talking, how about that?"
Jae smiled wider.
Oh, this trick. I beamed, unable to contain it. It was infectious.
"You're on the track team?" I asked. "Yeah, who snitched?"
"The entire school, duh. I heard about it at lunch. You seem to have immaculate feet, hot wheels."
Jae smiled and breathed out her nose. I could see the irritation on her face. "You know what. I'll allow it." Jae said. "I don't understand." I said, dumbfounded.
"You don't have to. Just know we're cool."
I nodded, still clueless. Jae and I boarded the bus and sat in different seats. It was full.
When the bus reached where I lived, I stood and looked back. Jae waved farewell. I waved back and headed out. I find her cute.
