"Goodbye house!" Rosalie shouted gleefully as she got into her shimmering silver car, specially polished so that it made a good impression on the new neighbours.
Rosalie loved to look good. Rosalie always liked to make herself look richer than she was. It made the neighbours want to meet them, that's for sure.
It was a complete lie, of course. Rosalie was far from being rich but good first impressions were always a bonus in her opinion, even though in the past they had hardly talked to their neighbours when they'd moved up until the recent location.
Zoe's eyes narrowed and she blinked, holding back the tears which were on the way to making a second appearance in the space of a few minutes. It was hard to leave her home. She imagined Penny at school now, sitting on her own at lunch. It was unlikely that that was the case because Penny was good at making friends, but it was still a possibility. Maybe Zoe had already been replaced? She knew all too well how quickly people forgot about you.
Penny couldn't be there to say goodbye because her parents had refused to let her get away with ditching school. They were strict and hated any of their children missing even an hour of school work. Penny hadn't even bothered to ask whether she could have the day off. Despite Penny's mother loving Zoe and Harry, she didn't love them enough to let her daughter's education suffer.
Zoe remembered the day before when Penny had come round, her plaited hair swishing as she hugged her friend, knowing that she wouldn't be here today. Zoe opened the car door and slid inside, her lips quivering as she held back salty tears. If only she had someone to drag her back and chain her to the banister, refusing to let her go. The only people who would be able to do that either weren't alive or a stranger to her.
Harry stood outside, holding Anna's hands and staring miserably into her eyes. She had finally come to realise that he was, indeed, moving, not having an affair with another girl. Harry would never do that, especially not to Anna anyway. Zoe could see that she was the love of his life. Obviously their mother was oblivious to this heartbreak happening before her. Harry brought his hand up to Anna's eyes and wiped away the droplets of water gently as a silent gesture.
Anna was a pretty girl. Her blonde hair dangled around her arms in ringlets and curls, softly spreading out down her back. She looked like a woman from a head and shoulders advert, Zoe always thought, and swore that she'd seen her on TV before. Her face was accessorised with dark pink stylish glasses that framed her wonderful blue eyes and made her cheeks even pinker and more pronounced than usual cheekbones. Her figure was wonderfully thin and smooth. The only bad bit was her mascara that was smudging around her eyes and dotting itself along her skin due to the tears streaming along her face. She didn't even use waterproof eyeliner!
"Come on Harry! Get your butt in here! Let's not wait for the grass to grow!" Rosalie called out of the window as she bounced in the car seat. That's what Rosalie was like: selfish and unobservant.
Zoe saw Harry pull a tongue at the glass childishly. If it had been anyone but his mother then it would have been a worse signal, but Harry had too much respect for that. Rosalie rolled her eyes but continued to bounce regardless, shaking the car from one side to the other as she messed around with the radio. Harry pulled Anna close and kissed her long and soft, one hand on her back, the other in her hair. He purposely ignored his mum and leaned on the car, making sure his back was to her before wrapping his arms around Anna's waist, kissing her cheek and neck.
"Ha! He won't be like that when we get there! They'll be so many good looking girls! He'll be all over them!" Rosalie raised her voice deliberately, leaning on the horn. "He wont even remember Anna."
