Zoe could tell, or at least had a feeling, that someone, either Inigo or Sebastian, was going to visit her tonight. She was sure of it. Sebastian was less likely, for he didn’t know where she lived and had never visited her before because of it. Even when it was probably likely that he knew where she was because it was the only house in the village with humans in it, she knew he wouldn’t visit unless she actually invited him in first. Maybe that was a vampire thing but she doubted it.

Inigo was the best possibility, and in a way, she felt glad that it was going to be him. Zoe was glad that Sebastian understood that they were just good friends, though he had said it in a rather strange tone, a tone of defeat. He had lost. At least he wasn’t that much of a sore loser. She was more like a prize than anything else and it was weird finally seeing herself that way.

Poor Sebastian. Inigo was stronger and he wasn’t the jealous type like Sebastian. The one thing that bothered her was that she was still single, even if she did like Inigo, for he hadn’t said anything about being together. He had just acted the way he acted with his sister, but he wasn’t as physical with Zoe and he didn’t have to fight his control with Saoirse.

She was sitting in her bedroom like always, as it was getting quite dark now, staring at the wall and thinking. Her phone was placed on her bedside table, face down because it hadn’t been used that day. It finally rang and Zoe jumped out of her skin before picking it up straight away. Who else would it be, but Penny.

“How’s it going?”

“Sebastian and Inigo had a fight in the yard today. Inigo was showing me this church in a field and Sebastian saw us a little bit too close and flipped. They were scratched to pieces.” She forgot that Penny didn’t know about them being vampires and bit her tongue once she realised what she’d said. Scratched? What boys scratched and didn’t punch or kick? Thankfully Penny seemed not to notice the mistake.

“Oh dear. Are they alright? Have they made up?”

“Saoirse broke it up before it got any worse. Good thing too, because it looked as if they were going to kill each other. It was quite scary at the time.” Brutal. It was so much worse than how she was explaining. She couldn’t explain the terror, how frightened she was at the time. It was too terrible to describe and even thinking about it made her feel quite ill. It was just as bad as any of the other horror movies she’d seen. It was real life and it was a horrible experience, something she didn’t want to encounter again.

“I’m glad no one had to go to the hospital.” Penny said.

“Sebastian had to go to the nurse because it was really bad.”

“Well, nothing’s happened around here. Nothing interesting anyway. Oh, Emily is going out with Josh, finally!” Zoe could hear the excitement in her friend’s voice and it made her smile. She was also quite glad to get off the subject about the two boys killing each other over her. It wasn’t a nice thing to talk about, especially when she couldn’t trust herself with what would come out of her mouth, as she kept forgetting Penny had no idea of the town‘s secret.

“Really?” Zoe beamed down the phone.

“Yeah! He asked her yesterday at lunch. She was sitting with her friends at that bench they always sit at, remember? The one next to that disgusting snot coloured bin. He just went over and asked her! Like, in front of everyone! He wasn’t embarrassed at all, you know, because we thought that was the reason he hadn’t asked her sooner? She nearly knocked him over, jumping on him the way she did. Everyone was so excited for them. They make such a good couple. He was bouncing around as if he’d just had his birthday!”
