Forever: Interesting Day
“I don’t see why you wanted me to wear the glasses if we’re just swimming,” said Maria. “I’ll have to take them off anyway.”
“So?” Nigel asked.
She rolled her eyes and peered out window. Her dark hair was pulled out of her face and into a high ponytail. A baby blue bikini top could be seen though her white v-neck shirt, though the bottoms weren’t. It was sort of hard to see anything through a pair of denim shorts. The blue-framed glasses sat on the bridge of her nose, slipping down a little every time the car hit a bump in the road.
“I can’t believe I actually did this,” Maria muttered to herself. Nigel smirked as he pulled the car into the dirt driveway.
When they got out of the car, Maria was attacked by a group of people: all the boys from the football game, Brookelle, and a pair of twins she had never met.
“Hi there!” squealed one twin. “You must be Maria! It’s so nice to meet you! I’m Selena!”
“I’m Serena,” said the other one, a bit calmer than the other. “Good to met you.”
Maria stood frozen at the spot, not sure if to move or what.
“You guys,” groaned Nigel. “Don’t overwhelm her.” He shoved past everyone else and pulled Maria to his side.
While the Selena and Serena babbled away nonstop, the rest followed them to the front steps of the lakeside house. All the boys were wearing swimming trunks and t-shirts. The other girls wore something similar to Maria’s attire.
The house echoed with noise when they entered. The polished wooden floors creaked only slightly under their feet as they trampled to the kitchen. There were three people in the kitchen. A very small, redheaded girl eating ice cream, a girl with a pretty face and blond hair, and a tall, collage-aged boy flipping coins onto the table. They all looked up when the small crowd joined them. The blond girl rolled her eyes and walked out the back door.
Roy stood up and grinned at Maria. “Hey, youngling,” he said, giving her a hug. “Don’t worry about Ivory, she’s just grumpy.”
“Hi, Roy-Joy,” said Maria, grinning back.
“Haven’t seen you in a while, but I supposed that was Kirsten’s fault.” He winked at her.
Maria shrugged.
“What are you doing here, though?” she asked.
“I’ve known these guys for a while now,” he explained. “I’m also their caretaker. Whenever Martin’s parents have to go out of town, which is very often, I take care of them. If it weren’t for me, the house would be in ashes right now.”
“Not like we really need a babysitter, but whatever,” said Ian.
“Come on, Maria,” said Nigel. “I’ll show you my room before we go outside with these buffoons.” He waved at Ian and Damon and ignored their protests. Grabbing Maria’s hand, he pulled her into the hallway and through a door that lead upstairs.
Nigel’s bedroom was just about the same size as Maria’s, but the walls were painted red. His bed was off to a corner, under a very sunny window. The room was neat, yet messy. Clothes on hangers hung on the back of a chair that was at the computer desk, where a white laptop was sitting with a window open to a random music website. The closet door was open and a basket full of freshly laundered clothing sat waiting to up put up. The blankets on the bed were scrambled around and pillows were slightly deformed. It reminded Maria of Will’s old room. It wasn’t anything special, but it was homey.
