"Paige!" my mom calls from the kitchen.
"I'm coming!" I say running down the hallway.
"Let's go, the truck is loaded!" her voice gets more faint as she walks out of the front door.
I turn around and look at the house I grew up in with mom and dad.
"I guess its okay that we move," I say to myself, "Dad I know you wouldn't want us to be sad for the rest of our lives." I look up speaking to him as a tear slips from my eye.
I wipe the tear as I walk out of the house, closing the door behind me.
"Mom, remind me again why you decided South Carolina." I say walking towards my truck.
My truck is a dark, forest green, Ford F250. Just like my dads was.
"You know why don't be a smart ass." she says as I open the door.
"I don't understand why we are leaving good ol' Texas for your job when there are perfectly good jobs here." I turn the truck on.
"I'm not going to explain myself to you, you're my kid." She closes her car door and rolls down the window.
"Fine." I make a mocking face away from her. "Let's go."
Mom pulls out of the driveway and the large moving truck follows close behind. Then I back out.
"Bye." I look at the house one last time.
We drive past my school. I sigh.
3 hours pass.
"Call Mom." I say to my truck.
"Calling Mom." It responds.
Ring. Ring. Ring.
"Hello?"
"Mom, I'm hungry and I can't sit for another three hours unless I eat."
"Alright, you see this Whataburger coming up?"
"Yeah."
"We'll stop there."
"Okay. Love you."
"Love you too."
I hang up. I then pull into the Whataburger parking lot. Getting out I drop my keys and jump down to get them.
"You're so clumsy." Mom giggles.
"I get it from you." I close my door and swing my arm around her neck.
"Make it quick I want to get to Louisiana by dark."
"Ugh. Okay." I open the door for her.
"I'm going to use the bathroom, number 1, no onions and a Coke please." I tell her as I walk down the hall.
"Okay."
I look in the mirror after finishing my business, three hours without peeing is a long time when you can't just go. "Ew! What is this?" I pick up a strand of hair that was sticking up. "Maybe that's why that dude at the light looked at me like that." I fix it and come out to see our food being brought out.
"Your turn mom." I point to the bathroom.
"Yep. I know when I got to go daughter." She gets up.
"Just checking." I take a fry and shove it into my mouth.
I wait until she returns.
"Okay now dig in." She says sitting down.
We eat and fill our drinks to go.
"Three and a half hours until Louisiana." I tell her walking out of the restaurant.
"Yeah but we are going to drive about four and a half to get through more." she drinks.
"Ugh. Fine. Where's the moving people?" I walk to my truck.
"They're meeting us at the hotel in Louisiana." She walks to her car.
"Oh okay. Love you." I get in.
"Love you too." She says.
She leads the way out and I follow.
We get on the highway and I turn on the radio.
Lost Boy by Ruth B. "Nope depressing." I press a button.
One dance by Drake. "Babyyyyy, nah not feeling it." I press another button.
Your Man by Josh Turner. "Baby lock the door and turn the lights down low, YES!" I turn up the volume.
4 hours later
"Call Mom."
Ring. Ring. Ring.
"Yes?" She answers.
"Almost there right?"
"Yes." She sighs.
"Okay I'm following you."
"I know I can see your big ass truck in my rearview mirror."
"Cool. Love you."
"Love you too." She hangs up.
I see her exiting so I follow. She pulls into a Holiday Inn and I see the moving truck. We park and go in.
"Checking in?" The lady at the desk says with a really Cajun accent.
"Yes ma'am." I say.
"Alright." She replies.
She hands my mom the key and up we go to our room.
The elevator opens.
"So what time are we getting up tomorrow?" I ask Mom as she opens the door.
"Eh, I don't know how's 9?" She asks throwing her bag on one bed.
I throw my bag on the other.
"Fine. If I go to sleep at Midnight we'll be just fiiine." I yawn. "I'm going to shower real quick and hit the hay." I say walking towards the bathroom.
"Alright, I'm going in after you so don't take forever like usual." She adds just before I close the door.
30 minutes pass
I'm laying in bed as my Mom walks to hers fresh out of the shower. I put my phone on the charger and set it on the nightstand.
"Goodnight Mom. I love you." I turn on my side facing away from her.
"Goodnight baby." Mom says getting into bed.
