Chapter 7

It was Monday morning and we all sat down at our lunch table. Bree had been absent all day, and we wondered why. She always checked the lunch menus, and if it was something good, she would make an extra effort to be there on time. Today it was tacos, Bree’s favourite, so we knew something was up.

“Have any of you seen Bree?” Keady asked.

“No, but something must be really wrong with her. I mean look…” I said as I pointed at the tacos. Reece and Keady gasped at the same time.

“What do you think it could be?” Reece asked as she took a sip of her water.

“I don’t know. She could be sick, maybe a family thing. I guess we could stop by her house fourth period, I mean we all have spares.” I said.

“Sure that sounds good.” Reece said as Keady nodded in agreement.

We all got in my car and drove to Bree’s house. I could drive the route with my eyes closed, because of all of the times I had to drive her home. As we drove down the street in which her house was placed on, we saw red, blue, and white blinking lights. We parked on the side of the street and ran as fast as we could to the house.

The front yard was filled with police cars blinking uncontrollably. Caution tape galore, and detectives roaming too and fro. Mrs.Delaney (Bree’s mom) was crying as one of the police officers was asked her questions and frantically jotting down notes. Mr.Delaney sat on the porch with a glass of ice cold water, staring blankly at one of the detectives. As Keady and I looked up, we saw a couple of very official men scrimmaging through Bree’s room. Keady and I looked around, and Reece was gone. But seconds later, we heard a scream coming from the scene. Reece was frantically kicking and screaming as 5 police officers tried to hold her down. I ran towards her and Keady stayed put.

“Let me go! She’s in there I know she is! She can’t be gone.” Reece cried.

“She’s my friend, it’s okay, I’ve got it.” I told the police officers. They asked how it was that we knew Bree, and I replied by saying that we were friends with her, and that we went to school with her. However, seeing Reece in so much distress, I told them that we wouldn’t be comfortable being interviewed.  After Reece had a chance to calm down, I walked her back to the car, where Keady was waiting, and I went to talk to Bree’s mother.

“Hello Mrs.Delaney, you know me right, I’m Lexi, Bree’s friend.” I said gently. She nodded.

“So, if you don’t mind me asking, what happened here.” I asked as a tear streamed down her face.

“Yesterday, Bree slept all day, I went in a couple of time to check on her and she seemed perfectly fine. Then Mr.Delaney and I went out to the grocery store, and when we came back, Bree was gone.” She said gravely. I could tell that she wanted to cry, but she was a strong woman, and held her stature.

“Wait, gone. What do you mean gone?” I asked.

“Someone kidnapped her, but we have no idea who would do such a thing.” She said. I nodded and gave her a big hug. I walked away furious. I had an idea of who kidnapped Bree. I walked up  to one of the police officers.

“Hello Miss, how may I help you?” He asked with a smile on his face. He looked young, maybe 19 or 20. Probably an intern.

“I was just wondering, what are you planning on doing with this case?” I said politely.

“Well, notify the public, maybe put up some flyers, but there’s really nothing we can do, there’s not enough evidence to even put up a solid case.” He said.

“Nothing you can do? A girl just got kidnapped, and you’re just going to put flyers like she’s a lost dog? That’s messed up, you know my friends and I could do a better job.” I snapped back.

“Well then maybe you should.” He said stepping closer to me.

“Maybe we will.” I said, seeing in the corner of my eye that he was trying to hold my hand. I grabbed his wrist and twisted it so hard that you could hear a crack. I walked away satisfied.

I opened my car door and stared at Reece and Keady.

“Well, it looks like the police aren’t going to do shit about this, so it’s up to us. We need to find Bree, and whoever is keeping her hostage. I can’t just wait around for the police to decide that they actually want to do something about it. So what do you say? Are you in?” I asked intensely.

“I’m in,” Keady said as she turned around to look at Reece in the back seat, “What about you Reece?” I awkwardly squirmed into the back seat and sat beside Reece.

“Listen, I’m not going to force you into doing this, but we will have a better chance of finding her if all three of us work together.” I said very convincingly.

“I don’t know, I’ll have to think about it.” She said. I nodded and then sat back in the driver’s seat. I drove both of them back home. First Keady, then Reece. After Keady had been dropped off, Reece moved into the front seat.

“So, do you have any idea of who did it?” Reece asked innocently. I stared at her, surprised that she had asked that question after she declined the offer to help find her.

“I personally think Nick did it.” I said.

“Why Nick?” she asked.

“Because, well I really don’t have any solid facts, but sometimes you just have a hunch you know? And speaking from experience, I think I should follow through on this hunch. I mean maybe he didn’t do it, but at least then we can cross someone off the possible suspect list.” I said. Reece nodded.

“Yes.” Reece said. I looked at her confused.

“Yes, what?”

“I mean yes, I’ll help.” She said with a smile. I looked at her and grinned.

After I dropped Reece off, I drove back to my house, thinking about the situation. I started to tear up half way home. After all of that protection, I had let her get away. And now she’s somewhere out there, and it’s all my fault. I failed, again.
