Chapter 11
“Yo Nick…get you’re filthy ass over here.” Keady yelled across the hallway. People stared, but she didn’t care. She meant business. Nick walked over to her timidly and then finally stopped 2 feet away. He didn’t say a word.
“So, Nick…where were you last night, at around…I don’t know 7:42:12.” Reece said demandingly.
“Wow, that’s pretty specific. I don’t know where I was at exactly that tim-.” Keady cut him off and squeezed his arm so hard that he screamed a little bit.
“Enough with the bullshit…now answer the question. Where were you?” Keady said as I pulled her back.
“I was here at the school. I was in the senior lab getting-.” Nick was cut off by the sound of two gun shots. The PA system sounded.
“May I have your attention please? The school is now on lockdown, please proceed to the nearest locked area in the school. This is not a drill. I repeat this is not a drill.” Muttered the PA system.
Everyone ran into classrooms like chickens with their heads cut off and it was hard to stay together. Reece, Keady and I linked arms and ran with the rest of the crowd, but seconds later I found that I was alone. I ran to the nearest row of classrooms, I checked all of the doorknobs…locked, locked, locked, locked, and locked. I started to panic and so I ran into a washroom stall, locked the door and sat there, crying silently. The silence was deafening, but I stayed still, as silent as a mouse. Just praying that I wouldn’t be found.
I heard footsteps coming closer and closer, and I accepted the fact that I was going to die. No questions asked. I heard a voice say “Hello? Is anybody in here?” and I immediately knew who it was.
“Reece?” I whispered. “Reece is that you?”
“Lexi? Where are you?” She replied. I opened the door and saw Reece. He face red and her mascara running. We hugged each other and cried. We were so happy to see one another. We sat in the same stall together for the rest of the time.
“Do you know where Keady is?” I asked.
“Yea, she’s in Ms. Caolie’s classroom. She’s fine.” She said, still slightly sobbing.
“Reece, if we don’t make it, I just want you to know…you are the one of the best friends I’ve ever had. Make that the best, because we have no clue what happened to Bree.” I said as we both slightly laughed.
“Same here.” She said as she smiled and then started to cry again. I hugged her and I started to cry as well. And there we stayed, for what felt like eternity.
Owen’s POV
Me and about 20 other students were huddled in a small spare room attached to the music classroom. As the teacher sat still and statue-like, others were sobbing, and others comforted them. We were told never to be on our phones during lockdown, but within 2 minutes, that rule was blatantly disobeyed. While people were tweeting, texting, posting pictures, and listening to music, I received a text. It was from Lexi. It read…
Hey Owen, I know we haven’t known each other for very long, but you are the most amazing guy that I have ever met in my life. I trust you more than anyone else and I’ve told you things that I’ve never told anyone else before. Even though right now I’m trapped inside a bathroom stall praying that I won’t be found by whomever it is that we’re hiding from, you are all I can think about. Just in case I don’t see you again, I want you to know that I love you. Oh, and if Collin is there with you, Reece wants him to know that she loves him so much and is the greatest guy that she has ever met. Well, that’s it...
