Chapter 12
It was noon hour and I heard a faint knock at the front door. I walked towards it and opened it up. There I saw Owen, with flowers and chocolates. He looked up and smiled. He dropped the gifts on the table in the foyer and hugged me.
“You’re okay!” he said joyfully. “Don’t you ever scare me like that again.”
“I’m sorry. But I’m fine, no need to be worried.” I said as he nearly cut off my circulation because he was holding me so tight.
We walked into the kitchen and I sat down on a stool, meanwhile Owen helped himself to the box of Girl Guide cookies in the cupboard. He had been to my house so many times; I’m surprised he didn’t decide to go take a bath instead. He chomped down 8 cookies at once, and then sat on the seat opposite from me. He looked at me with those big blue eyes, but I didn’t look back at him. I had other things on my mind. He pushed the box of cookies towards me, but I didn’t move.
“Okay, what’s up? You resisted the cookies and you never resist the cookies. Now spill it.” He said.
“It’s nothing, it’s just I’ve a lot on my mind lately.” I said and I traced Bree’s name on the counter.
“Well, let’s get it off your mind then. Who or what is it about?” He said as we switched stools and sat beside me.
“It’s about Bree…and well Nick.” I said as I looked up at him.
“Whoa, Nick? Why Nick?” He asked.
“We think he had something to do with Bree’s disappearance.” I said as I exited a single cookie from the box.
“Who’s we?” He asked.
“Keady, Reece and I. We sort of volunteered each other to help find her. Since the authorities aren’t going to do anything, and they obviously don’t care.” I said as I took a bite of the cookie.
“So, you asked them to help…but not me? He said as he pulled the cookie out of my hand and took a bite of it. “Why would you do that? You know that you and your friends won’t have a chance. You’re putting you and all of your friends in danger, especially if Nick is involved.” He said with concern.
“Why are you mad at me for including my friends in this? Bree is our friend, it should be us that finds her.” I said as I got up from the stool and started to walk away. I made it to the stairs, but then felt a hand grab my waist and pull me back. I turned around as Owen kept his hand on my waist. I looked up and I just couldn’t resist those ice blue eyes.
“I’m not mad at you because you included your friends and not me. I’m mad at you because I love you.” He said as he took his other hand and gently grasped mine. “I almost lost you once, and I’m not going to let that happen again. I’m not saying that you have to stop searching for her, just promise me that you won’t do anything crazy without me.” He said as he stared into my eyes like lasers.
“Oh yea, cause that big muscular body of yours is going to protect me?” I said sarcastically as I wiggled his arm.
“Yes, yes it will. Actually it might not, but at least I won’t feel as guilty if something does happen to you. Or at least not as guilty as I’m going to feel for this.” He said as he pulled me closer. I could feel is hand getting lower and lower, but I grabbed his hand quickly and pulled it back up. He looked at me and laughed, with that “I knew you were going to do that” look. I stood on my tippy toes and kissed him softly.
“ I think I’m gonna go take a bath now.” I said as I slowly backed away.
“Oh no your not. You’re not getting out of this that fast.” He said as he grabbed my hand and pulled me back. We both laughed, I mean we both knew that I was joking. He kissed me back and then lifted me up. We kissed until our lips were numb, and then he let go of me. He grabbed his jacket and walked out of the door. I walked out with him. He didn’t say good-bye, he just walked away. He got in his car and drove away. I was so confused. But then I heard footsteps behind me and then someone grabbed my waist, lifted me up, and kissed my check.
“You didn’t really think I was going to leave without saying good-bye did you?”
