Persey's (Natalie) POV
The hunting knife in Evan's hand was silver and sharp as he meticulously wiped it with white cloth. The shiny metal winked at me as he held it out as if to show me the face of death, and I saw my own reflection.
"What's the safe's code, Persephone?" Evans asked, his piercing eyes glaring at me.
"I don't know," I lied, my head was bowed down and my eyes glued on the carpeted floor.
I felt him moved nearer to my position. His fingers were cold as he touched my chin and lifted it up revealing my haggard face. "If I were you..." he said while gently slipping the edge of the knife against the skin underneath my jaw making the hairs all over my body rise. "I wouldn't choose to be stubborn... because I don't want to die."
In raging horror, my heart wouldn't slow down from beating too fast. My hands closed into a fist and I cried, "You promised to wait until James is here! Please stop hurting me!"
He pulled the knife away from me finally. "Did I say that? Oh, my bad," he shrugged pissing me off on purpose. He knelt down in front of me and I stared down at him with sharp eyes. "Sorry, darling. I'm a bad guy. And bad guys are not supposed to be trusted. Just like your husband. Didn't he teach you that?" he said in a mocking way.
He was right. Bad guys are not trustworthy... and I'm one of them. I once had deceived someone who had given me his full trust and I've disappointed him in the end. I'm no different from these guys who were trying to kill me right now.
"Mercy is not in my vocabulary," he said firmly. "Now..." he prompted as he pointed the tip of the knife under my chin. The lump in my throat was burning more painfully. "Tell me... the code."
I bit my lower lip as hot tears started pouring down my face. "I don't know."
"Are you going to tell me? Or do you want me to kill you?" he grunted.
"If you kill me, there'll be no one to tell you the code, even if James arrived. He wouldn't tell you because I'm dead," I said.
The next thing I knew was he slapped my face hard making my cheek felt numb but then eventually hurt so much, and leaving my head facing sideway. I inhaled deeply and closed my eyes in frustration.
"Fine!" he roared as soon as he got up from his knees. "You want to sacrifice somebody else's life? Then so be it!" he bellowed. "Bring those bitches in!" he commanded to his men as he pointed his long finger at the door.
The man standing beside the door with a gun in his hand opened it. At the doorway stood three familiar faces, Cree, Devon and Holly, with their hair all messed up, their clothes looked like torn rags and their faces wore a frightened expression. A ghastly whiteness spread all over my face upon seeing them. Their hands were tied up. Struggling, they had cleave gags on their mouths. Three men were holding them. They pushed them in and dragged them towards us, and Evans let them stand two meters away from my seat.
"Are these girls your friends?" Evans asked me.
