Addict With a Pen

Josh: 

I got off the bus after school, only to be pulled into the car by my mother. I sit in the front because Ashley, Jordan, and Abby all are there too, but Dad is at work still. 

'What's going on?' I ask. 'Mrs. Joseph is having her baby today!' Mom says. 'Oh,' that's why Tyler left school, that's good. It's funny, Tyler and I can't be apart for too long, we get bored too easily.

As we drive, I think about Tyler and how nice he looks when he smiles. It's funny, he doesn't actually smile anymore. The ends of his lips head towards his eyes but his eyes are sad. I should ask him what's wrong, even though he'll probably say 'nothing.' That makes me sad.

We arrive at the hospital and rush in. Mom says, 'Mrs. Joseph, she's having a baby.' 'Ah, room 021,' the secretary says. We walk over to the waiting room and I see Tyler running to me. 'How was school?' he says, actually smiling, 'Boring after you left, people kept trying to talk to me,' 'that's tough.' 'I know, I lived it.' I say before giggling.

Tyler only seems to really smile when I'm around, and it's just the two of us. 

'Josh,' Mom calls. 'Yeah?' 'Are you okay with missing soccer practice today?' 'Yeah, that's fine, it's a family emergency.' 'Okay, good,' Mom says before I return to Tyler. We just sit in peaceful silence, and it's really nice.

Why can't Tyler be happy all the time?
