Daniel's P.O.V

I looked all over for Louisa throughout the day, but she didn't seem to turn up anywhere. I watched the table where she usually sat with her friends at lunch but there was no sign of her, strange. Instead, I watched her lame friends laughing and joking and generally being weird. I have to admit, I was a little pissed she left me hanging without so much as a call.

I figured I'd just make my way over to hers after school, I didn't want to miss gym class. All the guys were to play football and the girls were on the track, I wouldn't miss that, we had a perfect view! I smiled at the thought and made my way to the locker rooms.

I turned up to gym with a pair of grey sweats and a white tee, which hugged my toned chest. I knew girls wanted me, and I knew I looked good. I worked damn hard for it too, so I liked to show off a little. Well, a lot. I liked the attention, what can I say, I didn't get much of it elsewhere.

As I walked past the girls stretching, I checked them out in their tight little shorts, their toned legs exposed. I was enjoying the view but didn't stare for too long as they stretched their legs. I didn't want to make it obvious I was checking them out. They always came to me.

I winked and smirked at no-one in particular, but it had all the girls melting. I chuckled silently to myself, they were so easy these days. Well except Paula. Instead of giggling and playing with her hair like the rest of her friends, she glared at me, standing tall with her arms crossed. I mentally rolled my eyes and threw her a cocky smirk. She simply stuck out her middle finger at me then started to jog around the track field. I couldn't help but watch her as she ran, she had a nice ass I thought. Too bad she hated me.

Well, you win some, you lose some, they say. Or in my case, you win all, lose one. I could easily make up for her but damnit it annoyed me beyond words. She was so stubborn.

I waltzed over to the guys and the coach. I was late and I knew the coach would make me do laps. Not that I minded, Paula would keep me entertained, she was so easily wound up. Well, that's only because her best friend and I were...what even were we? I wouldn't call us a couple or even dating so what were we? Friends with benefits? I don't think that really fits us either considering Louisa didn't even like me.

"Collins! Late, again," Coach Watson bellowed.

"Sorry, Coach. Got caught up," I shrugged.

"Well, you wanna go look at the girls? Go run with them for the rest of class." Oh great I thought. Now I would miss football. I sighed and made my way towards the track field where the girls ran.

"Rich pansy ass." I heard the coach mutter. I rolled my eyes and laughed a little before I took off in a jog. Comments like that only amused me, no one had that much of an imagination these days.

Running along the red track field was amazing. The wind whipped my face and burned my lungs. I loved the feeling of satisfaction I got when I worked out. I passed all the girls who added an extra bounce to their step to emphasize their chests. Some of them would really have to work hard considering there was nothing there but I gave a nod of approval anyway, not directing at anyone. They all giggled, forgetting about the running for a minute and broke into hushed whispers. God girls were discreet I thought.

I increased my speed until I was off in a full blown sprint. The bleachers, trees and the school were all a blur as my feet pounded on the ground. I finally caught up with Paula who was running just a little slower than me.

"Just to let you know, your ass looks great in those shorts." I said seductively, running beside her.

Paula stopped dead in her tracks. It was so easy to get under her skin. I stopped too and stood beside her. As usual, she was glaring at me and held her confident posture. She was feisty. I had to admit it turned me on, just a little.

"Listen Collins, I don't know what your little game is, but you don't fool me."

"And what's my game exactly?" I challenged stepping closer to her.

"Well I just told you I didn't know, how thick are you?" She threw her arms in the air, clearly annoyed.

"Ha ha, no-one likes a smart-ass."

"And no-one likes an asshole," she spat.

"Touche." I chuckled. Paula's scowl didn't waver.

"What do you even want with Louisa? And why are you going out of your way to agitate me? I have no idea why, but you have girls falling at your feet. So why go for someone who's clearly not on offer."

"I like a challenge."

"Well Louisa will never fall for you. She's got plenty of people who care about her and love her, and if you haven't noticed, she's got guys falling at Her feet." She jabbed a finger at my chest and turned to jog away.

"And by people you mean Scottie White, don't you." I raised an eyebrow.

"You're never be half the man he is. People will see right through you, just like I do," she hissed defensively.

"Yeah, well last time I checked, he wasn't jumping to help her out of her predicament," I growled.

"That's because he doesn't know and believe me, if he did, you'd be a dead man! You touch one hair on Louisa's head and I'll hunt you down myself. Got that?" I leaned in to whisper in her ear.

"Crystal clear. Except, you're forgetting something. I'm paying her for it." She brought her hands to my chest and pushed me back making me stumble from the unexpected contact.

"Asshole!" She shouted and with that, continued running.

Well, I think it's safe to say I won that argument. Instead of returning to the track I made my way to the locker rooms and sat on the metal benches with my face in my hands. I felt off about something. I just didn't feel right. I had a feeling I knew what was eating at me but I refused to acknowledge.

Grabbing my bag from my locker, I decided to leave early today. I ran to the parking lot where I got into my silver Porsche. I threw my bag in the backseat and put the car in drive. Pulling out of the still full parking lot, I headed to my destination. Louisa's apartment.

 ***

I ran up the stairwell, taking two steps at a time. As I walked along the long hallway with it's dark wooden flooring and grey walls, I still couldn't shake the unfamiliar feeling that washed over me. I didn't know what it was,but I didn't like it one bit. I normally just brushed off insults or arguments but something about what Paula said seemed to hit home somehow. I refused, however, to let her see how it affected me.

Without knocking, I entered apartment 309 to find none other than Scottie White standing in only his boxer shorts.

Something snapped inside me and for some unknown reason I felt like tearing him apart. He didn't seem to appreciate me being here anymore than I did. Our expressions were mirrored as we glared at one another.

Then Louisa waked into the room. When her eyes met mine, her expression turned from a beaming smile to a look of dread and fear, which angered me more.

Why was she scared of me?

The more important question, however, was, did I care?

Usually, the answer would be plain no but now, now I wasn't so sure.

What was happening to me? Was Daniel Collins turning...soft?
