"But feelings can't be ignored, no matter how unjust or ungrateful they seem."
- Anne Frank, The Diary of a Young Girl
Evelyn's POV
Later that night, the entire crew watches in anticipation as a huge storm runs through here, covering the skies in darkness as the sun sets, making it even darker.
Within an hour, we're all racing around the ship, falling to our feet, getting drenched under the rain and as water pours into the ship. Some of us are taking buckets of water out of the ship, others are fixing the sails, others are praying for this storm to end soon and others (like me) continue to race around, helping people up and falling down.
"Jack!" I shout out to our insane captain but he can't hear me as he continues to randomly turn the wheel drastically, causing all of us to stumble around the deck again. Racing over to where he stands, he finally takes notice of me and he waves in the most idiotic way.
"Jack, where are we going?!" I yell into the storm, my voice gets mostly muffled by the raging winds and the storming seas but I think he hears me.
"I already told you that, Evie!" He shouts back with an annoying nickname, making me cringe slightly. Just as I'm about to respond, he turns the wheel in practically the opposite direction, causing me to fall over again. He looks like he wants to help me up but keeps his hands firmly planted on the wheel.
Standing up from the soaked deck, I pull my hair out of face but it doesn't do much good when the rain pushes it right back where it was. I grab onto the pole right next to the wheel and hold on for dear life.
"We need to get out of here, turn back until the tides change in our favor!" I cry out, just as another wave hits the ship, sending everyone else flying except for Jack and I. His eyes linger on mine for a second before he shakes his head, a smirk gathering on his lips.
"There'd be no sense in that, we'll always have to go through these treacherous tides to get somewhere cursed!" He shouts as a response, and I barely understand what he says but all I can tell is that he's not turning back. I make my way to the lower deck where everyone is still stumbling around and Will catches me as I'm about to fall, grabs Gibbs and pulls us to the side of the ship.
"Did you talk to him?" Will has to yell over the storm for us to hear him.
"Yeah...he's dead set on making it through this storm," I shake my head, looking back at that crazy man on the wheel. Even from here, in this almost pitch blackness, I can still read the insane expression he wears on his face.
"How can we sail to an island that nobody can find with a compass that doesn't work?" Will asks the question that's on everybody's mind...well clearly except for Gibbs.
"Aye, the compass doesn't point north but we're not trying to find north, are we?" He holds the same smirk that Jack always sports.
"We should drop canvas, sir," Gibbs recommends, somehow Jack hears him from here.
"She can hold a bit longer." He responds, looking out at the dark sea.
"What's in your head that's put you in such a fine mood?" I shout, and Jack still doesn't look over as he answers, with a smile on his face.
"We're catching up."
----
At some point during the night, the storm must have died down and I made my way underneath where all the hammocks are. Around me most of the men are asleep, some of them tossing and turning in their sleep.
