"Sometimes it's hard to tell how fast the current's moving until you're headed over a waterfall"
- Kimberly McCreight, Reconstructing Amelia
"There's a freshwater spring on this island. We can restock there and get back to shooting each other later," Will points out on the map that we're all staring at.
"You can lead the shore party, and I'll stay with my ship," Jack smirks, wrapping an arm around my waist, and I just roll my eyes.
"I'll not be leaving my ship in your command," Barbossa counters and Will and I just exchange an annoyed glance.
"Why don't you both go ashore and leave the ship in my command...." He offers and they both glare at him, "...temporarily," He adds timidly. Before they can say anything, I'm jumping in.
"You're always safer on land than at sea, Jack," I point out, and he seems to realize that I'm right as he nods and we all move on our way off the ship. I pass by Elizabeth momentarily and she just glances away from me sighing, and I do the same as I load into the longboat. When I turn around, I notice Jack and Barbossa both staring out at the island with large telescopes and I just roll my eyes when I see how long Jack's is and how much it's wobbling.
"Boys! Stop comparing telescope sizes and get in the boat!" I smirk as I call over to them and I notice Jack blushing as they both shove each other and get into the boat. Rolling my eyes, I just take Jack's hand in mine as Barbossa gives us a look.
"Mind the boat," Cotton's parrot squawks towards no one in particular as we all exit from the boat, myself trying extremely hard not to touch the water. I only change when I'm submerged in water, but who knows? Can't take that chance.
"Evie," Jack's calm voice forces me to look up from the water and my eyes immediately fall on an extremely large, and extremely dead, Kraken. My heart sinks a bit as I trudge over to it's large, glassy eye, watching it and it watching me. It was only a few weeks ago when I saw this thing swimming through the water, the king of the sea. Now it's washed up on shore, nothing more than a carcass being swarmed by flies.
It was a foul creature, but it was rare. And now it's gone.
"Why did this happen?" I mumble to myself and I hear someone walking up next to me.
"'Seas feel different'. Ain't that how ya put it?" Barbossa notes and I realize just what happened here. Beckett and his merry band of New Age goons have the heart.
"Jones is gonna do whatever Beckett wants. Seas are his now," I realize and my tone is much more deflated than I thought it would be. Who knew that this would be how it ends? The age of piracy coming to a startling halt because of one very short man.
"They don't have to be," Jack adds confidently and I turn my head to look at him, granting a small, weak smile his way.

Jack's POV
As I watch Evie walk away from me, closer to the Kraken, I realize just how fleeting this life we live is. I've been lucky enough to escape death more times than should really be allowed, while others such as both the whelps and his damsel in distress' fathers have not been. This only makes me realize how eventually, everyone's luck runs out.
Whether it be my luck, or Evie's, we're both undeniably tethered to one another, so if either of us were to have our time be up, it'd be equally as unbearable and painful.
"Still thinking of running, Jack?" Barbossa's voice creeps up next to me and I want to roll my eyes but I don't have the energy as I watch Pintel and Ragetti run around, pretending to have slain the Kraken. "Think you can outrun the world? You know, the problem with being the last of anything, is by and by, there be none left at all," His profound words cause me to send him an odd glance before bringing my attention back to my beautiful Evelyn who is moving slowly around the incredible beast.
