"You have to remember, fear is not real. It is a product of the thoughts you create. Don't misunderstand me. Danger is very real, but fear is a choice."
- After Earth
Evelyn's POV
I never thought I'd have to tell them. Never thought they would have to find out, and certainly not like this. God, how could I let myself get into this situation?
As the water swirls around me, I can feel the bubbles running against my legs until my legs are no longer there. I swim over to where the rest of the group is and I dive deeper when arrows start shooting through the water, getting much too close for comfort.
When I'm about to resurface, I'm now farther away from the crew, and I'm hiding in the crevices of the canyon. Maybe they can't see me? Oh, who am I kidding, a tail is so obvious. Taking a gulp of the water to calm my nerves, I resurface. Slowly, oh so slowly, do I turn to face the crew and when I do I'm met with six pairs of wide eyes.
Shit.
"Nobody tells Jack," Are the first words that are rushed out of my mouth. Looking down, I notice that my long hair has perfectly covered my now exposed breasts and I try not to focus on the way that the water makes my skin glisten and my voice sound even sweeter than usual. I tried to break that sound in my voice for a reason.
None of them say anything for a moment, as we hear the cannibals still shooting arrows, but we're too far in now that they can't reach us. Suddenly, one voice stands out and all the firing of arrows comes to a halt. Quickly after, it goes completely silent outside of our little circle of rapid breaths and a nearby waterfall.
"Evelyn..." Gibbs finally says something as we all wade in the water, I managed to find a rock outcropping to sit on in the water. They all continue to eye my six-foot tail that practically glows underneath the crystally clear water. Damn this clean water.
"Sorry about this, love," I hear one man say and instantly, I feel a gun pressed against my forehead. Hissing loudly, I realize that my new fangs are probably showing. The remaining five all back off quickly, their eyes still wide as they examine me.
"Don't touch me," I say lowly and looking into the Indian man's eyes, I see a touch of fear but mostly confidence seeping out.
"Don't get me wrong, you are quite a sight, but I'm not dying today 'cause of a mermaid," He sneers at the name and I notice all of them also either shivering or cringing at this dangerous word.
"I'm not going to..." When he doesn't pull away the gun, I slowly reach for it and pull it away from my face, pointing it in the opposite direction, "I'm not going to hurt...any of you," I look around at all the fearful men and instantly flashes of ruined ships and murdered crews runs through my memory, causing me to recoil back into the stone wall behind me.
Noticing someone's hand coming closer, my eyes snap up to see Will reaching towards me. Flinching away from his touch, he quickly pulls his hand back, flushing slightly. Barely any of them have said a word this entire time, they're all still clearly shocked that they're in the presence of one of the most feared creatures alive.
"Look, I can explain everything later but we're wasting time. We need to get back to the Pearl. Back to..." I trail off, not wanting to finish that sentence. Besides, they all know who's name was about to make it's way out of my mouth. Nodding, they begin swimming away and a laugh escapes me, to which they all quickly turn around, their eyes turning a bit soft at the sound of my...angelic laugh.
"I know this island. Follow me," I instruct and when they hesitate, I laugh again and dive underneath the water, swimming the opposite direction. When I don't hear them following after me at first, I'm a bit disheartened so I resurface to hear them talking about me.
