"The world is a tragedy to those who feel, but a comedy to those who think."
- Horace Walpole
Jack's POV
"Aye, where do you think you're going?" I call out at Evelyn but she doesn't turn, only sends back a disgraceful finger.
"Well, that's not very nice," Grumbling to myself, I make my way back out to the shore, where the sun is already setting.
I'm not sure how long I'm out there for...humming...drinking...talking to myself, until Elizabeth saunters down to the shore and plops down next to me.
"Find her?" I slur, turning my head to her slightly but it's too fast of a movement and I have to stop and hold my head. I can feel her glaring at me and look over.
"Yes, I did." She coolly answers and I stay silent, taking another long drink of the aged to perfection rum. I hold out the other bottle of rum to her but she doesn't even look at it.
"That lass is absolutely infuriating. For both our sakes, I hope she stays gone," My mouth speaks before my brain catches up and I'm not exactly sure if I mean that. Elizabeth finally makes the connection and looks to me.
"No, she certainly is not. She's trying to get us off this island because clearly, you're of no help." She scoffs, rolling her eyes in the annoying way that Evelyn seems to do as well.
"Without me, young missy, you would not be here at all so I would suggest being grateful for my being here," I lean to her, snarling almost and I back up, lying down on the sand again.
"NO!" She shouts at me, standing to her feet and I gaze up at her with one eye open, "No, without her, I wouldn't be here. You wouldn't either! She went back for you, if you didn't notice! She broke "the code" as I keep hearing about, for you!" I can't tell whether it's her voice or the words she's speaking but something in what she just said makes a crackle in me.
"She went back for me?" I can't help but notice that out of the jumbled words in my drunken mind.
"Yes. And she could've easily kept going and left you behind but she didn't. Despite...everything she's been through with you, I guess, she still went back for you." She huffs, sitting back on the sand and wrapping her arms around her bent knees. We both stay silent, lost in our own world as her words muffled me.
Why would Evie go back for me? I thought it was pretty obvious that both of us share a strong annoyance for the other. Then again, I did just call her Evie in my head.
"Whatever the case may be, she still acted rudely to me today and that changes nothing," Are the last words I know for a fact that I consciously say before I drink the rest of my bottle and the one meant for Elizabeth and fall into a blur of sleep, and dreams of blue eyes.
