"Real love is always chaotic. You lose control; you lose perspective. You lose the ability to protect yourself. The greater the love, the greater the chaos. It's a given and that's the secret."
- Jonathan Carroll, White Apples
Evelyn's POV
I forgot how awful being alone truly is. Not until I was tempted with the irresistible taste of love, I never knew how miserable I was before him. People need people. I need people. I need him. Jack Sparrow. And I'm not stopping until I find him.
I've been on the move for a day and a half now, constantly wishing I had that damn compass Jack always keeps with him. Points to whatever you want most in the world...a bit too convenient, though, isn't it? Having not seen another mermaid for almost over a year, I find myself wondering where they all ended up? Or am I the last of my kind? God, no, I couldn't be. Mermaids may be awful creatures for the most part, but they don't deserve to be massacred.
As my day approaches its end and the sun begins to set, my heart lifts immensely when only a mile and a half away I spot a ship. Not the one I'm looking for, but at least then I can get some directions. As I near the ship, however, the hairs on the back of my neck raise and I feel the current changing, pulling me down and instantly I'm dashing for the nearest coral reef and hiding in there.
Almost as if out someone's nightmare, the infamous pet of Davy Jones appears, slinking along the bottom of the ocean, causing the water to swirl and swish around him, making the current that much stronger towards him.I literally find myself backpedaling against the waves to keep myself planted. My heart beats erratically as the slow moving...dare I say it...kraken...swims ever closer to that unlucky ship. Thank god I'm here and not on that ship.
I follow behind it slowly, wanting to see what it will do and all of a sudden, as if latched onto the ship by some supernatural force, it's zooming through the water now, churning unimaginable forces of waves behind it. It only takes a few seconds for the Kraken to be under the ship now, traveling a mile in five seconds easily. A gasp escapes my lips as I watch it divulge on the poor ship, wrapping its arms around it immediately, letting out the deepest groan that rocks me to my core, sending out waves.
Surfacing, I watch from above as men jump from the ship, try to climb the sails, but it only takes a few minutes for the deck to crack right down the middle and the Kraken to take it down - leaving no survivors. Completely wiped from the ocean, like the ship was never there, to begin with. I follow behind to see the Kraken's next move and after the ship is devoured it's continuing on in the same direction, slowly as ever and I feel chills creep up my spine at what I just witnessed.
Swimming over as quickly as I can, I go to assess the damage, check for any survivors...and I'm met with one man clinging to piece of wood. Immediately I swim over to him and when I recognize his soggy and exhausted face, I find my arms wrapping around him, completely catching him off guard.
"Eve...Evelyn?" Will whispers, too tired to get above that level in his voice.
"Oh my god, you're okay!" I shout but just as I say this, a ship emerges from the surface of the water, and we're both ducking underneath the water. My eyes remain on the Dutchman and at this, I wonder how Will got off, but that's a question for another day. I notice out of the corner of my eye, that Will's human eyes, squinting under the water, are focused on my seven-foot long tail, trailing below me and I roll my eyes.
I gesture to him that I'm going in for a closer look and he follows me, me reaching the Dutchman much faster than him. Waiting under the water for him, Will begins to climb the ship and at first, I stop him, but I realize he needs air and he needs to know what Jones' plan is so I let his shirt go. After a few minutes of not seeing him, I feel the ship begin to move and I start panicking. No, no, no...I need to stay with Will...we need to stay together.
