Three months later...
"Promise me we're not going to have a debate about what he/she is, okay," I told Chris on the way to whatever number of check-ups I've been to. We talked on the phone.
Yes, when you're pregnant you have a lot of medical exams yet I had to be monitored more due to my crazy night of yelling at Chris and passing out. Which was apparently caused by Hyperemesis gravidarum-- a severe type of morning sickness. I was much better once I reached the five month mark. All that can be said about is my first pregnancy wasn't easy.
"No debate. No bets," Chris reassured me.
"Thank you. So are you almost to Dr. Hemingway's?" I asked.
"Umm," he responded. "I'm going to be a little late."
"Why?" I felt my mood swing rage kick in.
Chris sighed, "My meeting with my agent just finished and the traffic in downtown LA is pretty congested."
"I told you to plan the meeting earlier," I said under my breath and I was annoyed.
"I'm sorry. My agent couldn't come at any time earlier to meet me, he was a little late, and the meeting went later than estimated. I'm sorry, Erin," he stated. "I will be there though."
"You better, Chris! Or you'll say adios to any custody and our relationship," I had to abruptly stop due to a red light.
"It's not like I'm not coming at all, Erin! God! You are irritable," he told me.
The tears came, "How can you say that?"
Chris immediately, "I'm sorry. That was rude."
"Save me your damn sorries! If you're fifteen minutes late, we're talking to my sister's boyfriend!" I yelled. "Got it?"
"Yes. I'll step on it!" I shook my head.
Before I could hang up, he managed a quiet phrase, "I love you."
"Really? I love you. But I kind of hate you right now. Bye!"
I took a couple deep breaths.
"I'm sorry you have to hear Mommy and Daddy fight. We love each other. It's just...we're still not used to each other yet," I told the baby.
That was one way to put it. We loved each other, yet our relationship felt new and unexplored. We were better than months ago yet things felt rocky. It kept me stressed, which did me no good.
Five minutes later, I arrived at Dr. Hemingway's.
Fifteen minutes later...
"Perry!" Dr. Hemingway tried to catch my attention.
I stopped staring at the clock, "I'm sorry."
"Is something the matter?" she asked.
"No," I said.
She planted her hands on her hips, "Come on. Talk to me."
Dr. Hemingway sat down and reached a hand out to me. I took it as tears came streaming down my cheeks.
"Erin," she urged. "Just talk. There will be no judgement from me. Sorry. I mean Perry."
I chuckled, "Please call me, Erin."
Dr. Hemingway nodded, "Of course."
I sighed, "You might have noticed that Chris and I have started dating..."
"Are you having relationship troubles?"
I shook my head, "I love him so much. It feels so new and I'm afraid we're going to fall apart."
