"The fundal height matches your dates, Erin," Dr. Heminway said. She moved her tape measure, measuring the length between the top of my uterus and my pubic bone. "About 18 weeks."

"That's good," I said, stretching my blouse over my budding bump. One could tell I was pregnant, but it also could've been mistaken for bloat from eating too much ice cream. "Though I'm shocked I haven't popped yet. I definitely have more of panza as my nannies would say."

"Everyone is different," Dr. Hemingway swiveled away to place her tape measure in the drawer and turn off the lights in order to conduct an ultrasound. "I have patients who've popped at the end of the first trimester to around where you are now."

"And some freaks of nature look six months pregnant when they're nine months pregnant," Chris added.

"That is also true," Dr. Hemingway chuckled. "Don't let the whole biggest bump craze and the fears about weight gain get to you. Weight gain is normal. It's more just making sure you're not gaining too much or too little as well as doing some exercise daily."

"Not yet. I mean I feel like my diet overall is good, despite really indulging in my cravings," this allowed for some inquiries to quell my nerves. I no longer was so petrified by doing things wrong, but I didn't want to kid myself I was doing everything perfectly. "I exercise when I can, but is my weight gain in healthy?"

"I mean you're on the smaller side, but it's not abnormal considering you've been more susceptible to nausea and vomiting," Dr. Hemingway replied, "Also, your bloodwork from the past few appointments have been in normal ranges. We'll be doing that again today and we'll also be doing the glucose test for gestational diabetes."

"Noted. Thank you."

"Do we have any other questions? Chris?"

"No," Chris shook his head. "A lot of what you're discussing has been mentioned in the books I've been reading."

"Glad to see y'all are doing your homework," Dr. Hemingway said with a smile. She then began to transition to the most exciting part of the appointment. "Lie back for me please, Erin. You know the drill."

I followed suit-- wriggling up towards the pillow to get comfortable. I rolled my stretchy blouse up again, exposing my little baby bump. Tension existed in my muscles awaiting the cool gel making contact with my skin. I tried to get a laugh throughout the room to ease it, "Thank god we've passed the stage where you have to insert the wand inside me to get a clear picture."

"I really underestimated how big it was," Chris said with a snicker after he spoke like we were in middle school.

"That's what she said," I said in a hushed tone. I smirked, continuing the childish. We'd also been watching a lot of the Office on my off days, so Michael Scott's quotes were etched into my mind.  Chris's eyes widened like he was Jim looking straight into the camera uncomfortablely.

"It's definitely less uncomfortable, this way," Dr. Heminway said with the gel bottle in hand, squirting it with a purt-purt across my abdomen. She pressed hard onto my belly as she moved the probe around until the ultrasound machine footage became clearer. The baby began to look more human with its profile. A nose and lips were discernable and so were its little toes. A black dot in its chest pulsated. He appeared to be awake as he did somersaults round and round. "There they're you two."

As this occurred, the fluttering sensation emerged. I asked, pointing at the screen, "I've been feeling this feeling like butterflies in uterus. Is that from him?"

"Yes," Dr. Heminway nodded and spoke while still investigating the screen for anything out of the ordinary. "Baby's been moving around for awhile. Since they're getting bigger, you'll start to feel it. A lot of new moms don't realize what's happening as it's so subtle. But he will be pushing up into your ribcage in no time."
