September 2015

I hadn't been to New York City since college. I graduated from Columbia for my bachelor's. One other city on this road trip I hadn't been to since college, Boston. After graduating from Boston University, I went to Columbia for my master's degree. I was born a California girl and ended up an East Coast person for most of my life. I missed it too much and moved back after failing to find as well as keep a job in Boston.

I didn't have to go on the road of filming, but I decided to see how parts of my idea were coming together. Plus Paul enjoyed my input. I had just as much power as he did yet I let him wield more than me. He was doing a fantastic job anyhow. He had the experience to boot. My typical day on the set included sitting and watching, eating food, drinking tea, grabbing coffee for Paul on occasion, and cracking jokes with the female goddesses of comedy. Melissa, Kristen, and Kate were the greatest trio of women from comedy ever assembled. We were even friends, yoou could say.

Funny enough since we started filming in the month of June and began in Boston; I hadn't spoken a syllable to Chris Hemsworth. Yes, he was single. Yes, he was the sexiest man alive according to People. Yes he seemed funny. None of those things mattered to me. We minded our business. We'd had been filming together for a month and still there hadn't been any conversation which made what follows even more strange and dare I say it again, unexpected.

After a long day of filming, I decided to walk to a favorite bar hangout from my Columbia days. The sky was a dark blue, the streets and buildings all a glow, and a couple blocks to walk. I didn't even ponder twice. No companion with me and I braved the streets of New York City alone. Nothing about the night felt wrong by any means. There weren't any butterflies in my stomach and no doubt in my mind. I shouldn't have gone out alone. I should've taken a cab.

I strided past an alley way and held my purse close to my body. From the corner of my eye, I saw figures moving in the darkness. They were like creatures from the shadows. I kept my focus forward and tried to ignore them. If I didn't attract attention to myself, then they would avoid me. My nose became filled with the stench of cigarette smoke and cheap alcohol. There were four men beginning to surround me like vultures. Again, I attempted to ignore them.

One placed an arm around me and said, "Have you got some place to go, young lady? Don't be in a hurry!"

"Don't touch me!" I said assertively, pulling away.

From the opposite side, his friend joined in and tried to grab my hand, "Come on, lady! Stay with us! A pretty woman like yourself shouldn't be walking these streets alone."

"Get your hand off me!" I moved away a second time.

The two others joined in a chant and still refused to stop, "Come on, Lady!"

I yelled, "Get away! Don't touch me!"

They began to come closer and surround me. My heart was beating fast and I tried to wrap my hand tighter around my purse. One of them had quick reflexes and grabbed it once again. He startled me with a screech, causing me to drop the purse.  For some reason, once I heard the jangle of the front clasp and scratch from the leather against the concrete, I thought they would leave. Take the money and run like criminals of the night do.

"What are you doing?" one whispered eerily into my ear. "Don't be scared."

The last straw was when the first to make a pass at me tried to lean in for a kiss. I slapped him across the face. My palm was red and the painful dull vibration of cheek-hand contact radiated up my arm.
